Statement by NYU Spokesperson John Beckman

September 29, 2023

Last week, a bomb threat was made against a member of the NYU community, evidently in response to a social media posting. The New York Police Department was immediately called; they promptly responded, investigated, and determined that the threat was not credible and there was no safety risk to the NYU community. NYU is deeply troubled by this threat of violence. Making a false bomb threat is a crime. We urge anyone with knowledge of who issued this threat to promptly come forward and speak with either the police or NYU’s Campus Safety Department.

Debate and even strong disagreement are natural parts of the free exchange of ideas; however, the use of intimidation and threats of physical harm aimed at individuals, groups, or institutions have no place in civil discourse and are at odds with our community’s standard of dialogue.

Making a false bomb threat is a crime. We urge anyone with knowledge of who issued this threat to promptly come forward and speak with either the police or NYU’s Campus Safety Department.
