More culture on campus, digital innovations for teaching or more space for bikes – since 2002, students, researchers, employees and alumni have been able to present their approaches for improvements in studying and teaching in the Academicus ideas competition. On 01.05.2021, the new round of the competition will start.
More than 40,000 students, 10,000 employees and countless alumni of TUM form a gigantic potential for innovation and creativity. They can all contribute their ideas to improve teaching, studying and campus life. The Academicus ideas competition helps turning ideas into reality.
Whether technical, social or didactic - every suggestion for improvement is welcome. All suggestions are examined for their feasibility and evaluated by a jury. The best concepts will not only be awarded €500 each, they will also be incorporated into new projects and implemented in concrete terms. In this process, they will be accompanied by experts from TUM.
Pianos and Publications
In the almost 20 years of its existence, countless creative ideas have been brought to the competition and put into practice. Last year, for example, Alexander Farr's proposal entitled "TUM Future of Education" was a stimulating suggestion to strengthen the ability for self-reflection and to anchor impulses for this in TUM's curricula in order to teach students strategies for effective, appreciative and conflict-avoiding teamwork. The TUM Institute for LifeLong Learning is currently developing a concept for the practical implementation of the proposal.
The year before, Simiam Ghan submitted an idea under the motto "Meet at the Piano," which may have been made even more appealing by the experience of the Corona pandemic: pianos were to be set up at various locations on campus to create very special places for meeting, exchanging ideas, and making music together. The proposal won an award from the jury, and TUM then provided pianos at various locations in Munich, Garching and Weihenstephan.
A TUM-owned publishing house that would publish outstanding project, seminar and final theses – this was one of the winning proposals of Academicus 2012. Students, graduates and staff were to be given the opportunity to make their work easily and quickly available to the public, thus underlining the impressive diversity of research at TUM. The university library took on the challenge of founding its own university publishing house with immense commitment - and launched TUM.University Press in 2016. Since then, the publications of TUM students and employees have found their way into the scientific community in five series.
