THE Reputation Ranking 2020

In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Ranking 2020, LMU again achieves an excellent result. As in previous years, LMU is rated as the most renowned university in Germany. Not only that, it improves its position to 42nd in the world, one slot better than in last year’s assessment.
The leader of the THE World Reputation Ranking is Harvard University, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Cambridge University. The current ranking is based on responses to a worldwide survey carried out at the beginning of this year, in which 11,004 academics in 132 countries participated. They were asked to name the institutions they regarded as the best – with respect to the quality of both tuition and research – in their own particular disciplines. The Reputation Ranking reflects the subjective assessments of the global community of scholars and scientists, and constitutes only one of the 11 indicators, which together provide the basis for the THE World University Ranking 2020-21, which was published in September of this year. In that evaluation, LMU was also rated best among Germany’s universities.
The previous global assessment from the same source, the THE World University Rankings by subject, which appeared late last month, anticipated the positive trend revealed by the latest figures. In the subject-specific ratings, LMU takes the leading position among its German peers in the following fields of study:
- Arts and Humanities (#1 in Germany, #18 worldwide)
- Physical Sciences (#1 in Germany, #21 worldwide)
- Life Sciences (#1 in Germany, #32 worldwide)
- Psychology (#1 in Germany, #44 worldwide)
The Global University Ranking issued by US News and World Report is particularly highly regarded in the US, and the latest edition of this appraisal (2021 Best Global Universities Rankings) also appeared in October. Here too, LMU defends its standing as the best university in Germany. The US News Ranking puts LMU in 11th place in Europe, and 46th in the world.
