The Department of Languages and Literatures is the largest department in the Faculty of Humanities, with 16 different languages, about 100 staff, about 1,250 full-time equivalent students, and an annual turnover of just over SEK 110 million. The Department's research covers the world's languages and literatures from a broad contextualisation and from a wide range of theoretical foundations and specific applications.

Subject descriptionSlavic Languages offers studies in Russian, Ukrainian and Medieval Slavic Studies. Education is mainly provided through freestanding courses and is offered at all levels: undergraduate (first cycle), master's (second cycle), and doctoral (third cycle). Russian is part of the Language and Intercultural Communication programme (master's programme).
Research is focused on translation studies and Russian literary studies, Russian historical linguistics, Swedish-Russian linguistic contacts, modern Ukrainian sociolinguistics, and Slavic medieval studies specialising in textual criticism and book history. Researchers in the subject engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with other researchers at the Department in a number of research areas.
DutiesWithin the programme, the duties are primarily focused on Russian and Ukrainian linguistics, but teaching may also include the subject Slavic Medieval Studies. The teaching is conducted at all levels, both on campus and online, and both daytime and evening.
Courses can span the entire range of disciplines involved in the subject, from linguistics and literary studies to language history, cultural history, history of ideas, and language proficiency. The teaching also includes supervision, seminars, course coordination, course administration, course development, etc. There may also be teaching on the Department's interdisciplinary courses and programmes, as well as assignments of an administrative nature.
The role also includes conducting research, and the applicant is expected to publish their research results and actively pursue research funding from leading Swedish and international research funding bodies, and to contribute to the research environment of the subject and the Department, for example by participating in research seminars.
The person holding the position is expected to be present at the Department and participate in the day-to-day work on site. The work in the subject is carried out in a teaching team, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute constructively in a collegial spirit, both to the subject and to the Department as a whole.
The position may also include other duties, such as administrative tasks and development work. The person holding the position is also expected to actively participate in the Department's development and work environment work, such as workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences. The majority of the work will be carried out on site at the University of Gothenburg.
Qualification requirementsQualification requirements for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (does not apply to lecturers) and the University of Gothenburg's appointments procedure.
To be qualified for employment as a Senior Lecturer in Slavic Languages, a person must hold a doctoral degree in a subject covered by the doctoral subject area Slavic Languages, or another subject deemed relevant by the recruiting department, or have equivalent academic competence.
Good knowledge of Swedish (or another Scandinavian language) and English is a requirement from the start of employment.
Assessment criteriaAssessment criteria for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (does not apply to lecturers) and the University of Gothenburg's appointments procedure.
In the selection process, primary emphasis will be placed on documented qualifications in the following areas:
Research qualifications in Slavic languages, which will be assessed with particular regard to the degree of originality and international anchoring,
Teaching expertise,
Experience in supervision and summative assessment in Slavic languages,
Good ability to teach in Russian, Ukrainian, English and Swedish (or another Scandinavian language).
Secondary emphasis will be placed on the following qualifications:
Management and administration of teaching (e.g. course coordination),
Experience in applying for and obtaining external funding,
Collaboration with the wider community,
Anchoring and active participation in national and international networks,
Higher education teacher training.
In addition, the ability to teach the subject Medieval Slavic Studies is considered an asset for the position.
The ability to teach in Russian, Ukrainian, English and Swedish (or another Scandinavian language) will be assessed in connection with the interview and trial lecture. The job also requires a proven track record of good cooperation and flexibility, which can be verified through employment testimonials and, for example, references.
Particular emphasis will be placed on how well the applicant can conduct a test lecture in Swedish (or another Scandinavian language) on the given topic, and conduct an interview in Swedish with elements of English, Russian and Ukrainian and orally discuss their research and teaching experience.
In addition, emphasis will be placed on how the applicant describes their career development to date and how it is expected to develop in the future, as well as how the planned research relates to the Department's research areas.
Preference will be given to the applicant who, after an overall assessment, is deemed to have the best potential to carry out and develop the duties of the position.
