The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as osteoporosis, endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.
Sleep is crucial for our health and well-being. During sleep, the body recovers, the brain processes information, and memories are consolidated. Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia can severely impact quality of life and lead to long-term health issues like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Therefore, sleep research is important to understand the mechanisms behind sleep and develop effective treatments for sleep disorders, which can improve both individual health and societal productivity.
The Centre for Sleep and Wakefulness Disorders at the Sahlgrenska Academy has been conducting translational research in this field for several decades and is seeking a biosignal engineer to analyse a large amount of sleep studies. Identification of new endotypes of sleep apnea as well as identification of cardiovascular risk factors embedded in the overnight signals is a main research line within our multiprofessional research group.
DutiesThe researcher will analyse and quantify long-term measurements of respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurophysiological biosignals from sleep studies. New analytical methods in the form of machine learning and artificial intelligence needs to be further developed and applied for improved endotyping and phenotyping of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems during different sleep stages. Advanced statistical models are necessary to use to link these phenotypic characteristics with clinical outcomes in patients with sleep disorders.
QualificationsA PhD in medical biosignal analysis is required. Experience in analysing sleep parameters (respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurophysiological signals) is highly desirable. Knowledge of MATLAB, Python, and statistical programs such as “R” or “STATA” is advantageous. It is important that the applicant can collaborate well with other researchers and clinicians within a larger team. The applicant should be able to express themselves in English, both in writing and speaking. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability, such as being proactive and flexible.
