The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located in the center of Gothenburg, with approximately 100 employees. The communication routes are good both nationally and internationally. The research focuses within the fields of Atom- and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Spintronics, and Complex Systems and Biophysics and is performed in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education programs at the Department include Bachelor- and Master programs in Physics, physics teacher-training programs, as well as outreach courses in Physics aimed for the general public. Gothenburg Physics Centre is a close collaboration with three other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, which creates an innovative environment for all researchers and students at the department. Information about research group:

One of the most successful research areas at the department is spintronics in Professor Johan Åkerman's group with a particular focus on magnetodynamic phenomena in thin films and spintronic components. These are studied using magnetic, electrical and optical methods, and modeled using GPU-accelerated micromagnetic simulations. In recent years, the group has developed a new microscopy technique in which femtosecond laser pulses with a high repetition rate (GHz) --- so-called frequency combs --- are used to drive continuous spin waves and acoustic waves in various magnetic and non-magnetic materials and multilayers, and these waves are studied using Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) microscopy. The department is therefore looking for a postdoctoral fellow in BLS microscopy of magnetic films, focusing on further developing the technology with femtosecond laser combs and understanding the underlying physics.

Job assignments

The main tasks are research. The tasks include studying spin waves and acoustic waves in magnetic thin films using Brillouin Light Scattering microscopy (BLS microscopy), where the waves are excited by femtosecond lasers with a very high repetition rate (GHz). You will work together with other doctoral students, postdocs, and researchers where your role will be to be responsible for further development of the BLS microscope and a better understanding of the various phenomena that occur when the magnetic thin films are excited in this way. You are expected to write scientific articles based on your results and also contribute to the scientific articles of others. You are also expected to present your results at scientific conferences.

Eligibility

Eligible to be employed as a researcher is a person who has a Swedish doctoral degree or has a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated scientific skill in the subject areas of spin waves, acoustic waves, optical microscopic methods, and BLS microscopy. Documented experience with femtosecond lasers, frequency combs based on these, and BLS microscopy where such frequency combs are used is a requirement. Scientific prowess is mainly based on peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals as well as invited lectures at international conferences.
