The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Marine Science (https: // www. gu.se/marina-vetenskaper) at the University of Gothenburg has with its broad scientific competence area and its unique infrastructure the most complete environment for marine science and marine education in Sweden. Only a few similar organisations exist in Europe. Through advanced research infrastructure and the clear connection to society's needs and challenges, the Department contributes to new solutions for the global challenges surrounding the ocean.

The Department of Marine Science conducts science, education and innovation related to the sea and its resources. The operation is conducted in Gothenburg, at the research stations Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, as well as on the research vessel Skagerak. The Department has an interdisciplinary width that includes marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, preservation of marine cultural heritage, and oceanography, and the research area spans geographically from coast to world ocean. Our scientists and students often have prominent roles in international expeditions in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the great world seas, but also work in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analyses methods. The Department also has a broad education palette, including a bachelor's programme, three master´s programmes and a Ph. D. education in the marine domain.

Project Description

At the University of Gothenburg, as part of the SMaRC project, research in sensor technology has been conducted, focusing primarily on spectroscopic methods. To further develop this ongoing work, FMV has expressed interest in continuing to support this research at the University of Gothenburg during the 2025/2026 period.

Raman spectroscopy offers several advantages compared to infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy, as the light scattering phenomenon is insensitive to water (unlike IR) and provides a molecular fingerprint, unlike fluorescence. The challenge of using Raman spectroscopy in natural waters lies in fluorescence interference. When using a laser within the range of 400–800 nm, fluorescence causes a strong signal that can overshadow the weaker Raman signal. Previously, we have worked on minimizing fluorescence by using metal colloids to "quench" this signal. Currently, development has focused on a system with 633 nm and 785 nm lasers. We now have the opportunity to expand our knowledge by acquiring two new Raman spectroscopic systems operating at 1064 nm and 285 nm.

Duties

The work includes testing three different Raman spectroscopic systems for the detection of organic compounds in seawater and sediments at low concentrations. Part of the job involves configuring a UV laser. The work also includes working with consultants to incorporate the optimal configuration into an underwater system. Evaluation of measurements will be carried out using machine learning.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants must have a master's degree in a relevant field, such as marine chemistry, chemistry, physics, or an engineering degree in a related subject.

Employment

The employment is a fixed-term employment for 11 months, 100% of full time and placed at the Department of Marine Science in Gothenburg. Starting date is as soon as possible upon agreement.
