Stretch feedback is an important component of motor control. Impairment due to stroke, spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis causes non-cooperative movement and unstable gait and balance that deteriorates the quality of life. Within this project, you will work in a research team to develop a new class of neuroprosthetic interface that mimics the behaviour of biological stretch reflex systems to tackle postural stability problems. The project's scope spans multiple disciplines, with significant components involving computational modelling of neuromuscular systems and their implementation on FPGA-based embedded systems. Expertise in these areas and artificial neural network applications is required to achieve the goals of the project.

Your profile
  • You have a PhD degree in biomechanical/biomedical/electrical engineering, computer science, embedded systems or in a closely related discipline.
  • You should possess skills and practical experience in the following topics:
  • - Computational modelling of neural systems, - Embedded systems programming, FPGA design using hardware description languages and/or high-level synthesis (VHDL, Verilog, Vitis HLS, Vitis), programming FPGA boards - Artificial neural networks and machine learning architecture, - Programming in C, C++, and Python

  • You are proficient in English, both speaking and writing.
  • Our offer
  • You will be appointed for a period of a maximum of 2 years full-time within a very stimulating scientific environment. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues;
  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU);
  • Gross salary between € 3.557,- and €4.670,- per month depending on experience and qualifications;
  • Excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8.3% and a solid pension scheme;
  • The flexibility to work (partially) from home;
  • Free access to sports facilities on campus;
  • A minimum of 232 leave hours in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis;
  • Excellent support for research and facilities for professional and personal development;
  • We encourage a high degree of responsibility and independence, while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff;
  • We are also a family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid) and career support for partners.
