The Department of Mechanical Engineering is part of the knowledge environment of advanced materials and is also involved in the Linnaeus University Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA), which is one of Linnaeus University's leading research environments. The department conducts research in the areas of applied mechanics, maintenance systems, quality systems, and production systems. The research is carried out in close collaboration with other departments and the industry. The department offers engineering programs in mechanical engineering and industrial engineering at the undergraduate level and a master's program in simulation-driven product development at the advanced level. The department is in a phase of expansion.

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellowship to contribute to a pioneering ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) project focused on the automation and digitalization of manufacturing.

Subject area for the position: Mechanical engineering Location until further notice: Växjö Terms and hours: 100% position for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Starting date: Starting date as agreed upon.

Job description The postdoctoral position is part of the Smart Dat project (https: // lnu.se/en/research/research-projects/project-smart-dat/), focused on supporting small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector in their transition towards more automated and digitalized processes. As a postdoctoral you will be part of a vibrant research team aiming to revolutionize the manufacturing domain through cutting-edge technology and innovation. In this project we aim to enhance automation and digitalization for SMEs in the manufacturing sector within the Linnaeus region. The project's objectives are to strengthen innovation, provide increased access to applied research, and thereby boost productivity and competitiveness among SMEs.

The project focuses on knowledge enhancement and promotes technology adoption in an existing demonstration facility. By facilitating long-term investments, it prepares SMEs to effectively address future challenges, recognize opportunities in automation and digitization, and navigate global competition and societal shifts.

The domain for this position is industrial engineering, and the focus area is the automation and digitalization of manufacturing. The key responsibilities could include:

  • Conduct applied research in digitalization within the manufacturing sector, with a focus on developing and implementing innovative solutions for SMEs.
  • Collaborate in the design and execution of experiments and projects within the project's demonstration facility, showcasing the application of new technologies and practices.
  • Perform data analysis, employing advanced analytics and visualization techniques to derive insights from multi-dimensional data, including production metrics and sensor data.
  • Conduct financial analysis, for example, cost-benefit analyses, investment evaluation for automation and digitalization solutions, and related areas, offering SMEs clear, actionable guidance for their investment decisions.
  • Contribute to the development of educational materials and programs aimed at upskilling SME employees in the relevant technological areas.
  • Actively participate in the Smart Dat project team, contributing to internal and external networking, knowledge sharing, and project dissemination activities.
  • Conduct high quality research and publish findings in top conferences and journals, as well as assist in teaching and mentorship when needed.
  • Qualifications In accordance with the postdoctoral agreement, applicants who were awarded their degree no more than three years prior to the last application date for the present position should be considered first.

    An applicant must not previously have been employed as a postdoc for more than a year within the same or a related subject area at Linnaeus University.

    The following are the qualifications for this vacancy:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field such as Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree in the aforementioned areas.
  • Assessment criteria Good knowledge of English is needed, and knowledge of Swedish is desirable.

    You should have the following:

  • Proven experience in data science and digitalization processes with high proficiency in programming e.g., Python, Java, C/C++.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle complex, multi-dimensional data.
  • Demonstrated experience in research within computer science/machine learning, as well as, in conducting cost-benefit analysis or similar economic assessments.
  • It is meritorious if you have a strong understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Experience in teaching and mentorship, along with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to a diverse audience, is also advantageous.
