The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people's health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections. Through a fruitful collaboration with the healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefits both health care and research

We are seeking a motivated researcher for a postdoctoral position in our research group. Our work focuses on preventing, reducing, and/or curing the chronic bowel problems that can arise after pelvic radiotherapy, and significantly impact many cancer survivors. Our research group is conducting three projects:

  • In the first project we are mapping changes in the intestinal mucosa and bowel symptoms after radiotherapy to dissect underlying mechanisms to find more optimal prevention and treatment strategies.
  • In a second project, we are investigating the impact of diet on the occurrence and severity of bowel symptoms following radiotherapy.
  • In a third project, we are planning a study to evaluate pharmacological intervention against the symptoms.
  • Our laboratory combines -omics analysis with fundamental laboratory techniques to deepen the understanding of the underlying pathophysiological processes, thereby increasing the chances of identifying successful strategies to help this large patient group.

    Subject area

    Radiobiology

    Subject area description

The postdoctor position focuses on radiobiology, with an emphasis on understanding and mitigating the chronic intestinal issues that may arise after pelvic radiotherapy for cancer. The research combines advanced -omics analyses, such as RNA sequencing and proteomics, with clinical and laboratory- based methods to identify underlying biological mechanisms and develop strategies for prevention and treatment. The project aims to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors by linking molecular changes to clinical symptoms and evaluating potential interventions.

    Duties

As a postdoctor, you will analyze and interpret -omics datasets, including RNA sequencing and TMT-mass spectrometry, derived from samples of irradiated cancer survivors. Your work will also involve performing laboratory experiments using fundamental techniques such as immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and other related methods. Additionally, you will work with data from clinimetric questionnaires to establish connections between molecular findings and clinical outcomes. The role also involves preparing and presenting research results in manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and at academic conferences.

    Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

    Assessment criteria

The successful candidate must have Ph.D. in bioinformatics or a related field, such as molecular biology or biomedicine. Strong expertise and experience in -omics analyses are essential, ideally with a focus on transcriptomics and proteomics data. Proficiency in relevant software tools, such as EdgeR, ClusterProfiler, and Perseus, is highly desirable. Previous experience in gastrointestinal research, mitochondrial dysfunction, or ischemia, as well as basic laboratory skills, is considered advantageous but not mandatory. The role also requires the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and excellent proficiency in both written and spoken English.

    Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 24 months, 100 % of full-time and is placed at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, the department of Oncology. Starting date; As agreed.
