av anställning

The research group for this project is primarily focused on mechanics and physics of micro-structurally heterogeneous materials. Micro-mechanical and coupled multi-scale models are developed to predict complex behavior of multi- phase materials, with an emphasis on (bio-)composites. To increase the predictive capability and to enhance the computational efficiency of the models, machine learning techniques, particularly artificial neural networks, are used. Job assignments

The project aims to employ bio-composites as coatings in Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), addressing their moisture sensitivity. Our goals: (I) Develop accurate models for simulating moisture diffusion in bio- composites used as coatings for WAAM-produced metallic components, accounting for complex microstructures; (II) Improve computational efficiency with Machine Learning, particularly Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), in multiscale modeling; and (III) Utilize ANN-enhanced models to design bio- composites with desired moisture properties, reducing reliance on extensive experiments. By achieving these objectives, we aim to advance the use of bio- composites as effective coatings for WAAM-produced metallic components, optimizing their moisture-related properties, and reducing the reliance on extensive experimental testing Being a PhD is a 4 year full-time studies and leads to a Doctoral Degree. Those who are employed as doctoral students must primarily devote themselves to their doctoral education. However, a doctoral student may to a limited extent work with education, research and administration max 20 % of full-time work.

Eligibility

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements. A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she: 1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: (i) have a second- cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant subject area in the natural sciences, or (ii) have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or (iii) have completed a corresponding programme of relevance to the planned third-cycle programme, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications. The specific entry requirements also include an acceptable command of spoken and written English.

NB: Applicants must not have resided in Sweden more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date.

Assessment

We seek a talented candidate for cutting-edge computational physics and mechanics research. The candidate should have or be close to completing a master's degree in computational physics, applied mechanics, applied mathematics, materials science, or a related field. Strong knowledge of solid mechanics, continuum mechanics, and advanced Finite Element Method applications is essential. Proficiency in advanced numerical methods and programming is required due to the project's computational nature. Excellent English language skills, both spoken and written, are vital for presenting research findings. Experience in micro-mechanical, multi-scale modeling of materials, and machine learning, such as artificial neural networks, is a plus.

Employment

A new employment as a PhD student applies for a maximum of one year. The employment may be prolonged for up to two years at a time. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent of four years of full time doctoral studies.

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years full time Extent: 100 % Location: Department of Physics, Gothenburg First day of employment: 01-April-2024
