The Department of Physics has an opening for an internship over the summer 2024, within a project on quantum error correction.

Future quantum computers will need to apply some algorithm for error correction, because quantum bits are very sensitive to noise. The most promising way is to use so-called topological stabilizer codes. Recently, experimental implementations of such codes have begun to be realized. An essential part of the code is a decoding algorithm that converts complicated sequences of measurements into operations that correct errors in the code. We have developed a decoder algorithm based on graph neural networks. The main topic of the internship is to work on implementing the algorithm on an FPGA as a first step towards integrating the decoder with a quantum computer. Depending on the qualifications of the applicant other related projects may also be considered.

The project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) and is a collaboration with researchers at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

The internship is funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation through EDU-WACQT

Work assignments

The employment concerns participation in an ongoing research project where we use an algorithm for error corrections of quantum bits for quantum computing.

Qualifications

The applicant must have at least 150 university credits in mathematics, physics, or related natural sciences and technology. Good prior knowledge of topological quantum error correction codes and their decoding, for example in the context of a master's thesis, is necessary. Given the limited scope of the employment, importance will be placed on an assessment of the candidate's ability to contribute to the research project.

Employment

Type of Employment: Temporary employment Extent: 100% Start date: 20240617 or by agreement Employment period: 11 weeks
