The University of Adelaide is seeking a visionary Commercial Manager to lead our efforts in translating world-class research into impactful commercial outcomes.

The Innovation and Commercialisation Services Branch (ICS) provides consolidated and commercially-focused support for all services that deliver research revenue.

As the Commercial Manager, Physical Sciences, you will play a pivotal role within the Commercialisation team which is part of the Innovation and Commercialisation Services Branch. Your primary goals will be to develop close partnerships within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and identify, develop and lead technology transfer opportunities within Advance Tech industries Collaborating with a wide array of stakeholders—including researchers, industry leaders, venture capitalists, and government agencies—you will drive the creation of new spin-out companies, manage intellectual property, and secure strategic commercial deals that amplify the impact of our research. Your role is crucial in unlocking new opportunities for the University of Adelaide, facilitating the translation of ground- breaking research into valuable global applications through intellectual property licensing and the support of new ventures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive Commercialisation Outcomes: Lead the negotiation and management of commercially focused technology transferdeals, including licenses, R&D partnerships, and government funding agreements.
  • Operationalise Technology: Provide expert advice to shepherd technological innovations from the lab to the marketplace. You'll be the bridge between cutting-edge research and real-world application, ensuring that our technologies meet market needs.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with industry, government, and academic stakeholders. Your ability to network and communicate will be key to securing revenue streams and driving research impact.
  • Portfolio Management: Take charge of establishing new ventures and supporting the University's spin-out companies and ensure that our intellectual property is effectively leveraged to maximize commercial outcomes.
  • To be successful you will need:

  • Resilience, a self-starter, and able to take a hands-on approach in a less structured environment, to identify potential partners and outcomes to effectively secure commercial deals.
  • Strong track record in identifying, co-ordinating, delivering to deadline and enhancing strategies in a complex multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Understanding of intellectual property protection processes and procedures.
  • Direct experience in executing commercial agreements (licences, assignments and company formation agreements) .
  • Demonstrated ability to use different leadership techniques to persuade, negotiate, motivate and drive transactions as a team player.
  • Existing and current networks with industry, research bodies, government authorities and the investment community.
  • The successful candidate may be required to hold or attain an Australian government security clearance
