Title

Associate Senior Lecturer

Subject

German

Subject description

The subject German has a literary and linguistic orientation, with the Department holding degree-awarding powers at all levels, including the third- cycle level. In addition to freestanding courses, the subject is included in various educational programmes at the Department, such as the Master's programme Language and Intercultural Communication, the Upper Secondary School Teacher Education programme and the Nordic Master Programme for Foreign Language Teachers, as well as the Master's programme German Contemporary Literature and Culture: Reception, Mediation and Context. Research in German is mainly conducted in the fields of linguistics, literary studies and language learning with elements of cultural studies. In addition, the subject's research is also included in the Department's interdisciplinary research domains.

Duties

An associate senior lecturer shall be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and teacher, and to gain both research and teaching expertise in order to fulfil the requirements for a position as senior lecturer. The duties comprise a minimum of 50% research in the field of German literary studies, as set out in the research plan, and a maximum of 50% teaching and administration.

Teaching may include all levels, both on campus and online, as daytime or evening classes. The focus of the duties is on German-language literature, but courses can range from German literary studies to grammar and academic communication and culture, both in freestanding courses and in the Language and Intercultural Communication programme. The position also includes teaching within the Upper Secondary School Teacher Education programme and involves, among other things, courses with a didactic focus, as well as visits and seminars in connection with the workplace-based training programme (VFU). Teaching also includes supervision, seminars, course coordination, course administration, course development, etc. Teaching on the Department's other interdisciplinary courses and programmes may also be possible, as well as assignments of an administrative nature. The subject also has contrastive courses, which are taught in Swedish.

An associate senior lecturer is expected to follow developments in their own subject area, actively apply for external funding, and participates in the Department's pedagogical and scientific development work. The applicant shall therefore already in their application describe how their own literary studies research can promote and contribute to both the research environment of German studies and the Department's research domains. The literary studies research in the subject German focuses on contemporary literature.

The bulk of the work will be carried out at Gothenburg University and the successful candidate will be expected to actively and constructively participate in the work of the teaching team as well as the department-wide development and work environment activities, which involves participation in workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences.

Qualification requirements

The qualification requirements for appointment as a teacher are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the appointments procedure of the University of Gothenburg.

Preference should be given to those who hold a doctoral degree or have attained equivalent expertise no more than five years before the deadline for applying for the position of associate senior lecturer. In this context, special circumstances are defined as leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Good ability to teach in both German and Swedish or another Scandinavian language is a requirement from the start of employment, as is the ability to teach in English.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a teacher are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the appointments procedure of the University of Gothenburg.
