Associate Senior Lecturer in Business Administration with Specialisation in Logistics (Urban Freight Transport) at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg

With its more than 3,700 full-time students, 470 employees, 160 international partner universities and four departments, the School of Business, Economics and Law has unique breadth. The Department of Business Administration is the largest department at the School of Business, Economics and Law, and conducts extensive research and is responsible for education programmes at first-cycle and second-cycle levels, as well as third-cycle education in the subject areas of Business Administration and Economic Geography. The Department has 150 employees and is divided into four sections: Industrial and Financial Management & Logistics (IFEL), Management & Organisation, Marketing, and Accounting. The Department also has an administrative unit.

The advertised position as associate senior lecturer is hosted by the Industrial and Financial Management & Logistics section. Appointment as associate senior lecturer is the first step in the promotion system of the Department and the Faculty.

Subject area description

Urban Freight Transport and Logistics concerns the analysis of the economic, organisational, and ICT aspects of freight transport to, from, and within urban areas. Key areas are the design and management of innovative, efficient, and sustainable urban logistics and transport systems. A large number of stakeholders meet in urban areas and the transport systems are designed and operated by actors in cooperation, and the systems affect and are affected by other parties. Analysis and development of ways to improve cooperation between private and public stakeholder groups is hence included in the subject. Furthermore, development of methods for evaluating the competitiveness and environmental performance of the urban freight transport systems is also relevant (for example the application of the business model approach to research into existing and planned logistics services).

Duties

The person hired for the position is expected to carry out research and teach in the area of logistics and urban freight transport and help strengthen our research and education concerning the role of transport and logistics for a successful transition to a sustainable society. A position as associate senior lecturer constitutes an initial step in a career development system. The work consists of a maximum of 50 % teaching and a minimum of 50 % research. The applicant is expected to work in a cross-disciplinary team and be interested in collaborating with researchers from other academic fields. Teaching may be carried out in Swedish in the bachelor programme Logistikprogrammet , in English in the masters programme Logistics and Transport Management , and in other relevant courses. Teaching will also include thesis supervision.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible for appointment as an associate senior lecturer, the applicant must have been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Assessment criteria

According to the Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg (GU 2023/397), the applicant shall be selected for the position who, based on an overall assessment of competence and potential for future development, is judged to have the best qualities for performing the duties included in the appointment. In the assessment, particular focus shall be on proven scientific skills and potential for future high quality research activities during the timespan of the position. Proven pedagogical skills are also a merit, as well as an ability to conduct relevant teaching activities during the timespan of the position.

For the advertised position, we require a person with

  • documented teaching and research experience in the field of Business administration, or equivalent background, with a focus on urban freight transport and logistics,
  • a strong ability to administrate and carry out research and teaching activities, and
  • a strong ability to establish and develop collaborations within research and education.
  • Qualifications that are highly valued for this position include

  • proficiency in a Scandinavian language, to enable teaching in Logistikprogrammet, and
  • documented experience with case studies and interviews in close collaboration with industry and authorities.
  • In addition, the evaluation will consider the applicant's ability to collaborate internally and externally to conduct the above-described work tasks and the applicant's ability to communicate about research nationally and internationally.

    Employment

    In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen SFS 1993:100) Chapter 4 Section 12a and 12b, an associate senior lecturer may be employed for a period of minimum four years, and at most six years, where the purpose of the appointment is to enable the lecturer to develop research autonomy and acquire the research and teaching qualifications necessary to fulfil the requirements for another more qualified teacher appointment (such as, senior lecturer).

    This position is a fixed term employment of four years (HF), 100% full time. The appointment may be extended if, due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, additional time is needed to achieve the purpose of the appointment. Starting date by agreement.     Promotion

    For promotion to Senior lecturer, an application for promotion must be submitted to the Department no later than six months before the expiration of the fixed term employment as Associate senior lecturer.

    According to the Department Regulations at the School Of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg GU 2021/3372, promotion to and employment as senior lecturer, shall be granted if external evaluators deem the candidate scientifically and pedagogically eligible for promotion, or is close to achieving this (within a year of termination of the appointment as associate senior lecturer), to associate professor (in Swedish: ‘docent'), and is suitable for such an appointment (Appointment to Associate Professor at the Department of Business Administration: Guidelines for Candidates and Internal Evaluators as per 2017/382).
