Title of position

Associate senior lecturer

Ancient Greek

Subject description

Studies in Ancient Greek are offered as freestanding courses at all levels: bachelor's level, master's level and doctoral level. Research in the subject is conducted in areas such as text publishing, philology, historiography, epigraphy, history of Bildung and translation. Research spans the entire period from Classical and Hellenistic times (Herodotus, Thucydides, Hellenistic philosophy) to Late Antiquity and Byzantine times (Marcus Aurelius, Libanius, Basil, Procopius, Theodore Metochites).

At the University of Gothenburg, the research field and the subject's doctoral programme are titled Greek. At the bachelor's level, the subject is called Ancient Greek. Together with the subject Latin, Greek forms Classical Languages, with its own teaching faculty and seminar activities.

An associate senior lecturer shall be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and teacher, and to acquire both research and teaching qualifications in order to fulfil the requirements for eligibility for a position as senior lecturer. The duties include research of at least 50% and teaching and administration of maximum 50%.

Teaching may include all levels, both on campus and online, as day or evening classes. In Greek, a large part of the bachelor's programme is evening and distance learning. Courses can span the entire subject, from language teaching, philology and translation theory to language history and the history of culture and ideas. Teaching also includes supervision, seminars, course responsibility, course administration and course development, etc. There may also be teaching in Latin (at bachelor's level) and in the Department's interdisciplinary courses and programmes, as well as assignments of an administrative nature.

An associate senior lecturer is expected to follow developments in their own subject area and actively apply for external research funding and participate in the Department's educational and scientific development work. The applicant must describe in their application how their own research can promote and contribute to the Department's research areas.

Most of the work will be carried out on site at the University of Gothenburg, and the person appointed to the position is expected to be present at the Department and participate in the ongoing work on site. But since many courses in Greek are online, it is possible to work from another location in Sweden to some extent. The work in the subject is conducted in a teaching team that includes teachers of both Greek and Latin, and the person appointed as associate professor is expected to contribute constructively in a collegial spirit, both to the subject and to the entire Department.

The position may also include other duties, such as administrative tasks. The person appointed to the position is expected to actively participate in the Department's development work and work environment management, such as workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences.

The qualification requirements for appointment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3-4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (does not apply to adjunct position) and the University of Gothenburg's own appointments procedure.

Preferred candidates are those who have completed a doctoral degree in Greek (ancient/classical) or have achieved equivalent competence no more than five years before the deadline for applying for the position of associate senior lecturer. However, a person who has completed a doctoral degree or has attained equivalent competence earlier than this may also be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include leave for reasons such as military service, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Knowledge of Swedish is a requirement from the start of employment, as is knowledge of Latin.
