The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as osteoporosis, endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.

Krefting Research Centre at Sahlgrenska Academy is now recruiting an associate researcher. The center consists of approximately 25 researchers, students, medical doctors, and research nurses divided into three research areas; epidemiology of asthma, molecular mechanisms of inflammation, and extracellular vesicles, see https:// krefting.gu.se

One of the largest epidemiological studies of asthma and lung disease in Europe has been conducted at Krefting Research Centre which is combined with basic research of molecular mechanisms in asthma. Cells release small nano- sized vesicles to the extracellular space. These extracellular vesicles have been shown to possess different biological functions and cells involved in various diseases release vesicles with altered protein and RNA cargo.

Krefting Research Centre has over 25 years of experience of working with asthma and over 15 years' experience of studies of extracellular vesicles.

Duties

The goal with the project is to determine the role of extracellular vesicles during inflammatory reactions. The project assignment includes to isolate extracellular vesicles from cell cultures, experimental mouse models of asthma and human samples. Extracellular vesicles will be analyzed using methods such as nano flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, and western blot. Experimental mouse models of asthma will be used for analysis of extracellular vesicles produced in vivo in the lung tissue. In these experiments, detailed studies of inflammatory cells will be done by flow cytometry and inflammatory signals will be analyzed by ELISA. Specific proteins of interest on the vesicles will be studied in detail with nano flow cytometry and knock out or over expression of them in cells.

The applicant is expected to work independently as an associate researcher in the group. The associate researcher will expand their network through collaboration with other research groups locally at GU that are studying vesicles and asthma.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a master's degree in a subject that is relevant to the position. Documented practical experience of laboratory work is a requirement. The applicant is expected to be able to work independently but also collaborate with other researchers in a larger team. Good abilities in English, spoken and written, are required. Previous experience of work with cell cultures, extracellular vesicles, flow cytometry and/or analysis of RNAs and proteins using molecular biology techniques are considered merits. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability with regards to personal characteristics such as being structured, thorough and having problem-solving analytical abilities.

Employment

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 9 months Extent: 100 % Location: Institute of Medicine, Gothenburg First day of employment: As soon as possible
