The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We are responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science. We are located in central premises at Natrium, Medicinareberget, Gothenburg.

Gisela Brändén leads a research group that focuses on studies of the respiratory enzyme cytochrome c oxidase. Through studies of the protein structure using a range of different biochemical and biophysical techniques we can better understand its function. Specifically, we use an advanced method within structural biology that is called serial crystallography where experiments are performed at synchrotrons and free electron laser facilities over the world. Through tight collaboration with the research facilities we develop the method further and make it accessible to novice users. In the Brändén group, we also perform quantum chemistry calculations to describe detailed steps of the enzymatic reaction of cytochrome c oxidase

Duties

The Brändén group has shas collected static and time-resolved structural data on cytochrome c oxidase at a number of X-ray facilities including MAX IV in Lund, LCLS at Stanford and SwissFEL in Switzerland, in collaboration with the group of Richard Neutze. The studies conducted over the last year are at various stages of data processing and preparation of manuscripts. Moreover, a new serial crystallography experiment is planned to be conducted late spring at the MAX IV synchrotron in Lund.

The associate researcher to be recruited will:

- Be responsible for data analysis of static and time-resolved serial X-ray crystallography data using specialized software

- Prepare protein crystals of cytochrome c oxidase in lipidic cubic phase.

- Participate in one or several serial crystallography experiments at the MX IV synchrotron.

We are seeking a highly specialized Associate Researcher that can demonstrate experience to fulfil the above listed tasks. If no suitable candidate can be found, then the position will not be filled

Qualifications

Required education, knowledge and experience, personal qualities

For the position of Associate Researcher, the successful candidate must have a minimum of a completed Master of Science degree in Natural Science or its equivalent. However, since there is little time remaining on the ERC project, it is essential that the successful candidate can demonstrate research experience in:

  • The growth of microcrystals of cytochrome c oxidase suitable for time- resolved serial crystallography studies using X-ray free electron laser and synchrotron radiation.
  • The analysis of time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography data collected using X-ray free electron laser radiation.
  • The analysis of X-ray Absorption and Emission Spectroscopy data collected using synchrotron radiation.
  • Merit education, knowledge and experience, personal qualities

Although a Master of Science degree is formally required it is considered a merit if the candidate has additional research training in the above areas of natural science.

    Employment

Fixed term during 6 months, fulltime at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology
