Linnaeus University takes pride in hosting one of Sweden's pioneering programs in tourism and hospitality. Since 2003, it has led the nation in establishing Tourism Studies as an academic discipline. Building on the success of its bachelor's program in International Tourism Management, which dates back to 1978, Linnaeus University now offers an international master's program in Tourism and Sustainability. The university's commitment to research and education in this field has earned it international recognition and high regard in global rankings.

The Tourism Studies program is housed within the School of Business and Economics, one of the five faculties at Linnaeus University. Alongside tourism studies, the School of Business and Economics conducts research, education, and collaboration in the fields of business administration and economics. Notably, the School of Business and Economics holds accreditation from AACSB.

Subject area for the position: Tourism Studies

Location until further notice : Kalmar. Travel between campus locations may occur.

Hours: According to the Higher Education Act (HF), an assistant professor may be employed indefinitely, but for a period of at least four and a maximum of six years as determined by the university prior to the appointment. Extent for 4 years.

Start Date: Start date according to agreement. Probationary employment is usually applied.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 12 c), an associate lecturer must, on application, be promoted to senior lecturer if they are (i) eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, and (ii) assessed as suitable for such an appointment in accordance with the assessment criteria used for the position. Such a promotion entails employment as a senior lecturer until further notice. The application for promotion must be submitted within the employment period for the position as an associate senior lecturer.

Job Description

The position involves research, teaching, and examination at both undergraduate and advanced levels, within degree programs and standalone courses in tourism science, with a particular emphasis on sustainability issues. The language of instruction is English, for both campus-based and online education. Active participation in the research environment is a prerequisite, as well as initiating and conducting research relevant to the subject area. It is part of the duties to actively seek external research funding. Collaboration and a dynamic approach in relation to students, colleagues, the research environment, and external partners are of great importance. The distribution between research and teaching is 50/50.


According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 4a), anyone who has been awarded a doctorate in in tourism studies or a related field, or who has the equivalent academic competence, is qualified for the position of associate senior lecturer. Consideration shall primarily be given to applicants who have been awarded a doctorate, or who have achieved competence equivalent to a doctorate, no earlier than five years prior to the deadline for the application for the position of associate senior lecturer. Applicants who have been awarded a doctorate, or who have achieved competence equivalent to a doctorate, at an earlier point in time may, however, be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include sick leave, parental leave, and other similar circumstances.

To qualify for this position, documented experience in collaboration and the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams are essential prerequisites.

Assessment Criteria

  • Documented scientific research outcomes pertinent to tourism science and sustainable development.
  • Expertise in the development and implementation of AI technology and methodologies, including machine learning and deep learning, for predictive analytics and model development.
  • Demonstrated capability in managing and analyzing extensive datasets, along with knowledge and expertise in technologies and tools for big data analysis.
  • International experience in the field.
  • Pedagogical competencies.
  • Proficiency in both spoken and written English.
  • When appointing new faculty members, the university conducts a comprehensive qualitative assessment of applicants' competencies and skills. This evaluation aims to identify individuals with the most suitable qualifications to fulfill current responsibilities, advance existing initiatives, and contribute to the overall success and growth of the institution.

    The following assessment criteria will be used in the assessment of any application for promotion to senior lecturer:

    The assessment of research expertise should be guided by the independence, volume, and quality of the candidate's research.

    Teaching expertise should be apparent from pedagogical work, including development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. Teaching expertise should furthermore include a reflective approach to students' learning and to the applicant's own role as a teacher.

    In addition to the qualifications mentioned above, promotion requires at least one published research article in a leading scholarly journal within the field, based on research developed during the appointment as an assistant professor. Additionally, documented pedagogical merits for course responsibility and course development, as well as assessment of student evaluations, are required.
