Becoming A Doctor Later In Life: Why It’s Never Too Late

Pete McAllister

Experiences

Life has a way of throwing a few detours at you. You may have had a lot of plans or ideas about what you would do in life to only find yourself taking a completely different direction.

And when one of the things that you thought you would do turns out to be really difficult, sometimes you take the path of least resistance. It’s this way for many people that had dreams to become a doctor and go to medical school or to law school and become a lawyer.

If this sounds like you and you wonder if it is too late to go to medical school and become a doctor, you’re in luck. It’s never too late to get back into school and realize your dreams of being a doctor. In fact, it might even be beneficial to have waited longer.

I’ll go over the reasons you can still go to medical school and be a doctor in this article.

Your education path

Having a bachelor’s degree in a science related subject will help when you are ready to apply to medical school, but it isn’t mandatory. Even a humanities degree will give you some benefits towards becoming a doctor.

Whatever your background, make sure to highlight how it will help you be a better doctor when applying to medical schools. Whatever job you had in the intervening years can be seen as an experience that would make you a better doctor than somebody who had gone directly to medical school.

AUSOMA is a medical school which will gladly take a student that is making the move later in life.

Your motivations are different

Another reason that becoming a doctor later in life can be better is that you have more clarity about what you want to accomplish.

When you are young and idealistic, you may want to become a doctor because of the glamour the profession provides. There is a big draw to becoming somebody important.

When you’re older, you have less idealism and a more solid vision of what it is that you want. You may be looking to fill a need in a community that doesn’t have a good medical infrastructure, or your family was touched by a particular disease that you want to join the fight against.

More focus

When you are young and don’t have much life experience, even when you are becoming a doctor it may be difficult to find your path. When you are older you can get right onto the path you think you are best suited for.

This means that you can make sure that you direct the resources available to you in the right way. You’ll have a very specific area to devote towards honing your skills so you don’t waste as much time going into the wrong field you aren’t best suited for.

And as far as resources go, you will likely have more money that offers a much different experience in medical school than if it were to happen when you’re young. You can get much more out of the experience if you have the funds so you don’t have to worry about the money part as much.
