However, the Pango team introduced a number of innovations, including a flexible set of designation criteria to adapt to changing circumstances. Further the Pango nomenclature limits lineage names to a maximum of four levels of ancestry, to ensure lineage names don’t get too long. When chain of ancestry gets too long the lineage names are given an alias to shorten them again.
