Funded by the charity Parkinson’s UK, the study investigated whether the αSyn-RT-QuIC method could be used as an early diagnostic test or measure of progression for Parkinson’s. Researchers also wanted to see if the test could distinguish between different clinical subtypes of Parkinson’s and people with Parkinson’s from people with MSA. Dr Beckie Port, Research Communications Manager at Parkinson’s UK, said: 'This hugely promising diagnostic test could aid in the earlier detection of Parkinson’s. 'This could be a significant development towards a future early diagnostic test for Parkinson's. Such a test would enable the newly diagnosed to access vital treatment and support to manage their Parkinson’s symptoms sooner.
