The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full time, one-year visiting guest lecturer position in the Dance Area for the 2023-2024 academic year. We are seeking artists with an active creative practice and specialization in non-Eurocentric forms, particularly African Diasporic forms, Hip-Hop and Street Dance, to provide instruction within their area(s) of expertise to our undergraduate and graduate populations.

The visiting guest lecturer should have a robust choreographic profile and creative methodology, and be actively networked in their communities. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in teaching one or more forms of diasporic dance at all levels, as well as innovative approaches to one or more of the following: composition and choreography, dance history, dance technology and film, somatic practices, dance topics or theory, or improvisation. The successful candidate will work closely with our resident student company Dance Repertory Theatre and produce work for the departmental performance season. Additional course load and responsibilities may include undergraduate and graduate student mentorship.

Our program's priority is to cultivate artist-citizens committed to leadership, community, equity, and social justice. To that end, we are committed to cultivating a rigorous curriculum that draws upon multiple disciplinary and artistic approaches while encouraging students to position their own work and development within broad social contexts. Our curriculum is designed to develop concrete skills in performance, choreography, and pedagogy and to instill an intellectually broad and deep appreciation of the role that dance plays in human culture around the world while ensuring our students are competitive in the current marketplace. We are committed to academic excellence, diversity, freedom of expression, activism, social transformation, and civic responsibility.

Our future colleague will help us innovate within one of the largest university theatre and dance communities in the country, with 50 full-time faculty and staff, 400 undergraduate students, and 70 graduate students. We aim to create the most intellectually diverse, inclusive and equitable department possible by cultivating a community of faculty, staff, and students that includes the experiences and expertise of historically-underrepresented traditions and perspectives. The University of Texas at Austin has been designated a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and we fully engage in the University's mission to foster a community that values diversity and inclusion as necessary elements of a world-class educational environment. We enthusiastically welcome applicants whose teaching and professional practice demonstrate inclusive excellence.

Qualifications must be commensurate with rank and include an outstanding academic record, significant achievement in original research/creative activity/exhibition record and a commitment of quality teaching. The successful candidates are expected to have a demonstrated expertise in teaching one or more forms of diasporic dance at all levels.
