With more than 26,000 students, three Clusters of Excellence, 5,000 members of staff, over 150 institutes and an outstanding infrastructure, Leibniz University Hannover offers an innovative environment for top-level education and research in a comprehensive range of subjects.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics invites applications for the following position of Salary Scale W3 NBesO as soon as possible: University Professorship in Mathematics Education

The Position

We are seeking a scholar with an outstanding academic record at both the national and international level, who represents the full breadth of mathematics education in research and teaching. The professorship will complement and strengthen the existing — including externally funded — research activities in mathematics education at the Institute for the Didactics of Mathematics and Physics. Teaching duties comprise foundational and advanced courses in mathematics education for students preparing to teach at academic secondary schools (Gymnasium) as well as at vocational schools.

Your Profile

We expect

  • an internationally recognised research record in mathematics education, evidenced by high-impact publications and other academic achievements;
  • a research focus on qualitative or quantitative empirical research into mathematics-related teaching and learning processes, or on qualitative or quantitative empirical research into digitally supported mathematics learning, particularly incorporating new tools and methods such as artificial intelligence;
  • an independent and forward-looking research programme that meaningfully complements and expands the profile of the Institute for the Didactics of Mathematics and Physics and the Faculty;
  • extensive teaching experience in mathematics education within secondary-level teacher training;
  • a proven track record in securing external funding.

We welcome

  • a specialisation in school-based mathematics education or in university-level mathematics education;
  • a willingness to engage in academic collaboration with the mathematics and physics education research groups at the Institute for the Didactics of Mathematics and Physics, as well as with the subject-specific research groups within the faculty;
  • a willingness to actively participate in the Leibniz School of Education (LSE) and the Centre for Higher Mathematics Education (khdm);
  • a willingness to analyse developments in the field of digital media and tools on a sound academic basis and to actively contribute to shaping them, thereby helping to define the profile of teacher training in the natural sciences and technical subjects at Leibniz University Hannover.
