University Librarian, 1FTE, Permanent

Applications are invited for an appointment as University Librarian, 1FTE, Permanent at University of Galway.

The challenges of our time demand leadership and vision. That was the case too back in 1845, at the height of the Great Irish Famine, when our university was founded at a time of profound social and ecological challenge. 175 years later, we continue to build upon a long tradition of scholarship and discovery that confronts the problems of our time and serves the public good, empowering our people, city and region to prosper. Today, the University of Galway community comprises 19,000 students from over 100 countries and 2,500 staff, one-in-five of whom came to Galway from overseas. With around 110,000 alumni and over 3,000 research collaborations globally, our international reach and impact is significant, and growing. Reporting to the Deputy President and Registrar, the University Librarian will provide overall leadership for University of Galway Library and Archival services across all its campuses from a range of locations, including the James Hardiman Library, the adjoining Hardiman Research Building, the Medical Library at the Clinical Sciences Institute, University Hospital Galway and the Library at Shannon College of Hotel Management beside Shannon Airport. As the University embarks on building a new Learning Commons on the Galway campus, scheduled to complete by 2027, the Librarian will also lead the transition to the new library environment, which will be a major element of the University's infrastructure and identity.

The post-holder will provide strategic direction, professional leadership, change management and managerial support for all Library Services staff and functions to meet the needs of the University. The role is University-wide, providing support for teaching and research within the broad remit of library and archival services and scholarly communications. The Librarian will advise the Deputy President and Registrar, as the relevant UMT member, on all matters relating to the provision of library and archival services.

We are seeking a visionary and experienced leader to join us at this exciting moment and lead the Library into its next phase. The successful applicant will have personal drive, enthusiasm and professional expertise to provide exceptional leadership and high quality services, working closely and productively with academic staff, researchers, students and professional services colleagues, as well as current and potential partners beyond the campus.
