  • Position Summary:

    The Consortium Library, University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is recruiting part-time reference professionals to cover a mix of evening, weekend, and weekday reference desk shifts. The Consortium Library serves students, staff, and faculty of UAA and Alaska Pacific University, as well as members of the local community. Research services are provided in-person and via chat/text, email, Zoom, and phone. Part-time reference professionals play an important role in our Instruction and Research program by providing reference desk coverage and assisting librarians with projects. Professional training and development opportunities will be provided as needed.     Duties:

    Provide general information, research, and technology assistance to UAA/APU students, staff, faculty and community members in-person and via chat/text, email, Zoom, and phone. Refer advanced questions to librarians or subject specialists.

    Report service-related data using transaction tracking software.

    Assist librarians with projects and tasks that may relate to information literacy, collection development, assessment, data/statistics, LibGuides/web services, outreach/marketing, etc., according to the needs of the Instruction and Research Services department.

    Maintain familiarity with Library and University information, services, and policies to include emergency procedures in order to provide the best possible service to library patrons.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: • Excellent customer service skills. • Effective written and verbal communication skills. • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn and effectively use the Consortium Library's discovery service, catalog, research databases, and Springshare web applications. • Technology skills to include Google Suite, Word, internet searching, common office equipment, and technology troubleshooting. Able and willing to quickly learn new technologies and software. Able to teach library users of varying skills levels to effectively use various technologies. • Reliable and dependable. • Ability to exercise sound judgment and think creatively to solve problems. • Ability to work independently and take initiative. • Ability to work effectively, sensitively, and collaboratively in a diverse and multicultural environment.

    Preferred Experience & Education:

    Coursework or work history in areas of library resources, library services, and current technology.

    Required Experience & Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in any field and one year of experience in a relevant field (e.g. libraries, museums, information services, etc.) (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) are required.

    • Experience providing customer service or reference services.

    Salary Information:

    $22.36/hour.

    This is a part-time, temporary staff position. Temporary professionals work up to 14 hours per week, depending on department needs and candidate availability, and work under minimal supervision.
