Job Purpose
To manage technical aspects of the research on behalf of the Principal Investigator PI, including providing specialist technical expertise in the relevant discipline and being responsible for the creation/set up and/or operation of all technical resources to aid the delivery of research objectives.
Specifically, the job requires expert knowledge of mammalian cell culture and molecular biology techniques, optimising and conducting second messenger and/or other cell-based pharmacological assays, as well as general laboratory organisation, and management tasks.
In addition, the post holder is expected to undertake a range of technical support activities in line with the College/School strategy.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Undertake specialist technical aspects of research projects as instructed by the PI utilising the post holder's extensive technical expertise in molecular biology, mammalian cell culture and pharmacological cell-based assays as a member of the research group.
2. Provide specialist technical advice to the research team including research, teaching and technical staff, undergraduate and post-graduate/PhD students. Where required, support the supervision of students within the research group.
3. Progress technical aspects of research objectives in accordance with pre- determined timescales as set out by the PI
4. Keep up to date with developments and technology advancements in topics related to the current research/technical areas and within the broader discipline to ensure contribution to research goals are optimised.
5. Independently generate ideas and implement agreed proposals for experimental strategies. Design and create experiments, systems, protocols, equipment and/or technical resources to support the delivery of research objectives.
6. Be responsible for the management of technical aspects of the research project, including relevant, management of the laboratory, technical resources, radiation suite and technical staff. Ensure operational delivery of technical resources is optimised and seek to continuously improve the technical service.
7. Be responsible for troubleshooting complex technical problems, including issues with the design and operation of technical resources and/or with the date that is generated.
8. Undertake complex data analysis, identifying trend, problems or anomalies, and present findings clearly to the research group and/or wider audiences via presentations, group meetings or within appropriate research publications.
9. Where relevant, perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group i.e. monitoring expenditure, organising lab rotas, consumable stock control, equipment preventative maintenance rotas, making informed decisions and advice on purchasing of capital equipment and consumables following consultation with appropriate colleagues and providing summary reports to PIs as required
10. Be responsible for the day-to-day management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety and/or other specialist legal requirements and maintain all necessary pertinent records in accordance with set requirements.
11. Keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the work of the research group and advise and train group members as appropriate. Report any potential issues to the PI and/or relevant internal or external bodies timeously.
12. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School and/or PI, HoPS and/or Chief Technician

14. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/School activities as required.

Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and qualification framework level 8 Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role
A2. Significant breadth or depth of technical knowledge and recognised as an expert in the relevant discipline
A3. Up to date knowledge of relevant legislative requirements applicable to the role, including but not limited to Health and Safety, CoSHH etc.
Desirable:
B1. SCQF level 9, (Degree, SVQ level 4 or equivalent in Biomedical Sciences
B2. Working towards Professional Registration with relevant Scientific Body
B3. Significant practical and theoretical knowledge of molecular pharmacology techniques
B4. Radiation Protection Course Certificate

Essential:
C1. Demonstrable specialist technical skills aligned to the specified discipline or research project. Significant breadth or depth of technical knowledge and recognised as an expert in the relevant discipline. C2. Significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist or bespoke software packages.
C3. Excellent communication skills, both orally and written

C7. Ability to work with a high level of independence and as part of a team to accomplish specific tasks and problem solve.
C8. Ability to use initiative, judgement to prioritise and plan a broad range of technical work to meet competing demands to progress work
C9. Ability to impart knowledge, skills and guidance to a wide range of staff groups, stakeholders, when necessary, at research group or technical staff meetings
Experience
Essential:
E1. Significant relevant work experience within a similar research environment, including evidence of previous outputs and professional development
E2. Experience of understanding and interpreting complex technical requirements of service users and implementing appropriate methods of achieving their needs
E3. Experience of managing budgets, including approving spend and monitoring outgoings on behalf of others
E4. Experience of operating independently in progressing and delivering research goals within set timescales
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £33,232 - £36,924 per annum.
This post is full time and Open ended.
