Job Purpose

The School of Infection and Immunity, MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) is seeking to appoint a Technician to support the CVR within the Sir Henry Wellcome Complex, Garscube Campus. The postholder will provide technical assistance, maintenance, and laboratory support to primary and tissue culture laboratories throughout the Complex whilst undertaking duties that support the research groups and CVR as a whole. The postholder will work closely with laboratory users and Floor Co-ordinators to provide an efficient service and contribute to the smooth and effective running of day- to-day operations.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of CVR laboratories to ensure an excellent experience for service users including being a Floor Co-ordinator for a designated area within the complex.

2. Carry out a range of technical support duties including operating and maintaining specialist equipment, reviewing existing systems and procedures including implementing technical solutions to address practical problems.

3. Contribute to the CVR's business continuity plan and with the creation and development of new technical resources as directed by Principal Investigators (PIs) and CVR Management.

4. Identify, propose, and implement technical solutions to a range of practical problems.

5. In collaboration with PIs ensure the safe and efficient functioning of CVR laboratories. This includes implementing and adhering to health and safety policies, as determined by the University and Health & Safety Executive.

6. Maintain laboratory areas including equipment, diagnose faults and troubleshoot general day-to-day issues, escalating serious faults to the Head of Operations.

7. Provide guidance to service users on various applications and operations relating to technical resources.

8. Provide ad hoc technical support to specialist laboratory facilities and equipment rooms as required.

9. Carry out deep cleaning of the laboratories and equipment as required as well as coordinating weekly housekeeping rotas for laboratory users.

10. In conjunction with the Technical Manager and Head of Operations, organise meetings with laboratory users and/or PIs to help resolve challenges in the laboratories.

11. Manage the disposal of chemical, equipment and cardboard waste from the laboratories.

12. Actively participate in the sustainability forum.

13. Carry out laboratory inductions and training for new staff and students.

14. Ensure consumables and equipment are appropriately stocked and maintained, place communal orders if required.

15. Keep clear and accurate records on progress with daily tasks and challenges.

16. Support the Head of Operations and Technical Manager with contractors and engineers as required and provide ad hoc support with Estates related reactive issues.

17. Keep up to date with advancements in technology, methodology and safety, continually updating technical knowledge.

18. Undertake further reasonable tasks and duties as required by the Head of Operations.

The above duties are not exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake any other relevant duties as required by the PI/line manager which are commensurate with the grade of the post.

Essential

A1. Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 (National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2. Up to date knowledge of chemical and biological health and safety requirements in a laboratory environment.

A3. Detailed technical knowledge of systems and processes in a relevant scientific discipline.

Desirable

B1. Degree in a relevant scientific discipline.

Skills

Essential

C1. Highly organised with a meticulous approach to work, including recording information.

C2. Ability to work independently and troubleshoot problems.

C3. Demonstrable ability to learn and adapt to changing protocols and technologies.

C4. IT skills including experience of using Microsoft Office programmes.

Experience

E1. Significant and demonstrable relevant work experience within a research laboratory environment.

E2. Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of staff and students.

E3. Experience of working with others within a laboratory environment.

F1. Experience of managing a research laboratory.

F2. Experience of creating, reviewing, and improving technical resources.

F3. Experience of using Agresso to raise requisitions and purchase orders.

F4. Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.

Salary will be Grade 4, £23,581 - £26,038 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and has funding available until 31 March 2028 in the first instance.
