  • About This Opportunity

    The Technical Officer supports the Faculty of Science Workshop in providing professional, high-quality electronics/electrical repair, design, and manufacturing services, technically orientated support to workshop clients and technicians. You will provide support in a variety of activities including teaching and research, laboratory, project liaison, and technical advisory.

    The University of Queensland's teaching and research relies on high quality laboratory and field equipment. The Workshops function sits within the Faculty of Science at The University of Queensland (UQ).

    This position is located primarily at the St Lucia Campus however, travel to remote sites may be required.

    Key responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct service, diagnose, troubleshooting and repair down to the component level of a wide range of scientific and auxiliary equipment, complex instrumentation, and teaching aids within the University

  • Design and development of equipment using PCB design software

  • Manufacture of equipment to support Teaching and Research projects in accordance with relevant policies, standards.

  • Liaise with clients across the University, in order to meet their technical requirements.

  • Implement time management principles, including sourcing, planning and multitasking, and renegotiate unexpected disruptions with clients to achieve timely and quality outcomes within the agreed timeframe

  • Maintain detailed, accurate documentation in accordance with workshop guidelines, policies and procedures, including stock management, project management, electrical safety compliance and finance.

  • Provide Test and Tag service as required.

  • Any other reasonable duties directed by Workshop Manager as needed.

  • This is a full-time (100%), continuing position.

    At HEW level 5, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $77,396.47 - $86,029.78, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $90,553.87 - $100,654.84 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.

    About You
  • Completion of a Diploma or advanced certificate and extensive relevant experience in applied electronics or a combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Demonstrated technical skills with the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair down to the component level of a wide range of scientific equipment or similar.

  • Proven ability in using hand and power tools, electrical test equipment, soldering/desoldering tools.

  • Experience in PCB design and development.

  • Demonstrated experience in working with variety of concurrent projects, including the ability to prioritise tasks, work to tight deadlines.

  • Must have sound understanding of good workshop practices and strong commitment to safe working practices.

  • Demonstrated commitment to a high standard of customer service, strong interpersonal skills and an ability to engage effectively, in writing and in person, with internal and external stakeholders of varying levels of seniority.

  • Proven ability to work within a collaborative team environment with a willingness and ability to perform a wide range of operational tasks, follow general direction, learn new processes and actively apply oneself to mastering all aspects of the role.

  • Demonstrated literacy in using the Microsoft Office 365 to support workplace tasks

  • A QLD Restricted Electrical Licence and QLD Driver's Licence.

  • Desirable:

  • Experience with Arduino/Raspberry Pi based projects and programming skills.
  • Installation, configuration and repair of computer system hardware.
  • CAD skills/experience ie; SolidWorks
  • Relevant experience in the tertiary sector or other large organisation.
