Sustainable Labs Project Coordinator

Grade 5 (£25,742 - £29,605 p.a.) Depending on experience

This role will be based on the University campus, with scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

Are you interested in engaging people with sustainability? Do you have good knowledge and understanding of laboratory environments? Do you want to join a dynamic and committed team working collaboratively to embed sustainability across the University of Leeds?

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Sustainability Service who support the University to deliver on our sustainability commitments. Sustainability sits at the heart of the University's overarching strategy, Enabling Strategy and Climate Plan. At the University of Leeds, we are proud to be a leading institution for high-impact, internationally recognised research output. Our laboratories play a key role as places of innovation and discovery. However, laboratories can have significant environmental impacts, using 3 – 10 times the amount of energy as office spaces, producing vast amounts of waste, and consuming extensive quantities of single-use plastics. Our Sustainable Labs programme supports our lab community in improving sustainability in labs and is being expanded as part of the University's Climate Plan and target to deliver net zero emissions by 2030.

We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated individual to deliver, support, and develop our Sustainable Labs programme. Working with the Sustainability Programme Officer, you will help to embed sustainability initiatives in laboratory spaces across campus, raising awareness of the programme and increasing engagement with laboratory-based colleagues, particularly encouraging and supporting labs to gain Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) accreditation.

You will have an interest in sustainability and practical experience of working in a laboratory environment, with a good understanding of the environmental impacts of scientific research. You will work with laboratory staff and other services across the University to challenge and improve processes, identifying and developing research opportunities such as Living Lab projects, so will have a creative problem-solving approach. You will be required to confidently engage with research and teaching laboratory-based staff across the University, so the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels is vital.
