  • Position Summary:

    We are in search of a staff member who is a creative, positive team player with a pioneering spirit and true zest for work in a university summer hospitality program. Interns are needed to help oversee our summer conference Hospitality service program and supervise hospitality staff. We are looking for individuals with strong leadership and people skills, organizational and multitasking skills, ability to work in a busy and fast paced environment at times, and a genuine interest in providing quality customer service. Public/private sector employment experience with cash handling skills is a plus.

    Duties:

    10FACILITIES MANAGEMENT - Monitor area complex facilities to minimize wear and tear, encourage safety and security, and develop resident responsibility and community pride. Develop strategies for facility damage reduction through community development. Investigate and communicate facility concerns to University Housing. Provide first responder coverage for facility related emergencies.Essential

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Team leader for up to twenty-five (25) Guest Services Representative summer staff members while under the direction of the Event Services management team. Duties include supervision of summer staff, scheduling staff for 3 rotating shifts (24/7 shifts) at 1-2 Residence Hall desks, training, and evaluation; summer staff contact in the areas of counseling, conflict resolution, crisis management, mediation, discipline, organization, advising, and social justice training. Lead staff in displaying professionalism and teaching them about great customer service, handling guest reservations, guest check-ins/check-outs, staff meetings and the decision- making process. You would also be directly responsible for the collection and accountability of all daily cash handling receipts, administration of daily front desk operation, and staff or guest problem solving. Additional duties would include assisting conferencing summer staff with questions they may have while on their shift of on-call duty for emergency problem solving within the Residential Halls and apartment areas after non-typical business hours of 5pm-8am.

    Typical Experience:

    Prior work experience in Housing, Event Services, Residence Life, Student Services, hotel or other hospitality/customer service position is required. Supervisory experience in one of these areas is a plus but not required.

    Required Education or Training:

    Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel programs. Retail experience is a bonus. Seeking candidates with experience (but not required) in working with Seattle Technologies Conference Programmer / IRIS Registration / IRIS Front Desk databases, Persona Key Systems, and/or Residence Life.

    Salary Information:

    This position is temporary, full-time, 80 hours per pay period, non-exempt, Temporary Staff Grade 77, minimum $20.47/hr.

    Our summer 2023 conference program starts April 10 through September 10. This position is shared with another intern; therefore teamwork, support, and communication are crucial. You will be provided with a fully furnished apartment shared with possibly 1-3 other interns.

    You would be part of a bigger picture: You would be part of an intern group and the Event Services Department team. You would also have exposure to the office of Campus Services and the Department of Residence Life.

    Other responsibilities include: Assistant Event Services General Manager in revising the summer intern program training procedures and adding them to the program binders. Also, assisting Residence Life with any conference housing issues on a rotating basis as part of the intern team. Will work with UA Protection of Minors Program through Risk Management.

    Education opportunities include: This Internship will provide you with a good perspective in the hospitality management arena with focus on a hotel type operation within a community campus environment. Residence Life may also provide many meeting opportunities with several of our UAA administrators and educational ladders in Administration, Student Affairs, and Academic & Multi- Cultural Services. We also make sure that all Interns have enough free time to enjoy our beautiful city and state and all that it has to offer you. There will also be several networking opportunities with hospitality professionals in the Anchorage area.

    The Alaska Experience: Alaska is a unique site for summer conference activity with groups arriving from all over the world. Prior interns have enjoyed the Alaskan summer setting as an interesting Internship challenge, taking into account opportunities for outdoor adventures, extended daylight hours, and targeting conference services to the needs and interests of a diverse guest population
