  • Position Summary:

    Native Student Services is a culturally grounded and student-centered office with a small, but great team! The student candidate will have an opportunity to develop and learn new skills while working with a variety of students, faculty, staff and community members. As the first point of contact for NSS, the student worker will be friendly, reliable, and responsible for student support. The student must have the ability to be proactive and work independently. The student worker will serve as a positive role model and an active team player in establishing an atmosphere conducive to academic success and fostering a sense of belonging and community for Alaska Native, Native American, and Indigenous students.

    Duties:

    Essential duties to aid in student success, include total management of social media through a variety of online platforms from start to finish. The Student must have the ability to learn the online platforms which includes Content Web Management (CMS) for the NSS website, Canva to create and edit flyers, Marketing Cloud to design newsletters and to send group emails, Qualtrics and Google for designing surveys with a strong emphasis on accessibility content and cultural responsiveness. Training will be provided throughout the semester/year. Assist with NSS events and programming, both with ideas, planning, and facilitation of events. Will also serve as the lead on certain student-facing programs within the NSS space through overseeing marketing, coordination of event details, and facilitation of the programming. The student worker will record data of the number of students and community members they serve for mid-year and end-of-year reporting, conduct inventory, run errands, check on outgoing and incoming mail, provide consistent housekeeping of the NSS lobby and storage areas, and have a working knowledge of copier/printing/faxing machines. The student worker will provide excellent receptionist duties, be knowledgeable about UAA and community resources, with an emphasis on Alaska Native resources. The student worker will be responsible for outreach to scholarship funding organizations and Native Corporations to update contacts, to send invitations, and for logistical planning for NSS events. The student worker will create and give PowerPoint presentations to individual guests/tours. The student worker will serve as peer support to students. Helping with NSS's goal of serving students holistically, the student worker will build a rapport with students who use the NSS space to guide them with directions, UAA resources, referrals, and to make sure their academic, social, and personal needs are met.     Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures is required. Strong customer service skills in person, over email, and on the phone. Must enjoy working with the public, be pleasant and welcoming, and effectively communicate clearly to other students and visitors at NSS. Ability to maintain confidentiality and to adhere to FERPA regulations. Organization and attention to detail is necessary. Ability to follow instructions, exercise sound and independent judgment. Knowledge of event planning and logistics is helpful. Ability to learn technical instructions. Ability to work independently and as a team member.

    Preferred Experience & Education:

    Customer Service experience preferred.

    Required Experience & Education:

    The student worker must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive/ Documents, Blackboard, UAOnline. High School Diploma or equivalent. To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

    WORK STUDY PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have been awarded and have accepted their federal work study funds for the academic year.     Salary Information:

    Hourly Rate: $12.03, up to 20 hours a week.
