Position Summary

Job Summary

America Reads tutors provide literacy and math support and tutoring to students in the Selinsgrove Area School Districts. The tutor supports the goals of the America Reads program and performs duties and special projects as assigned by the cooperating teacher in the school district. This position is defined as a non-exempt position under FLSA regulations.

Specific Responsibilities

· Employees are responsible for attending all scheduled shifts, arriving on time, and leaving the building when the shift is over.

· Employees are responsible for their own reliable transportation to this off- campus job site.

· Employees are responsible for creating a schedule with the cooperating teacher and keeping the teacher abreast of any changes to the schedule.

· Job duties can include but are not limited to tutoring (practicing math skills, reviewing spelling words, studying for tests), reading (read to/with students), helping with homework, and assisting students using a computer for Study Island, PSSA prep, or other study reasons.

· Tutors will also be responsible for building a positive rapport with students and encouraging students to be their best selves and put forth effort.

· The employee should be an organized, creative, responsible, and dedicated individual.

· The employee will be provided the opportunity to gain experience with and illustrate the following career-ready competencies: self-development, professionalism, critical thinking, communication, equity & inclusion, leadership, teamwork, and the use of technology.

Learning Objectives

· Students will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, time management skills, teamwork skills, and conflict/behavior management skills in their daily work environment.

· Students will create or build upon a professional resume.

· Students will develop a better understanding of community service and diversity.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • First Year, Sophomore, Junior, Senior with the desire to assist Selinsgrove Area School District students, will be successful in the position.
  • All Majors but Education majors are preferred

    Additional Requirements

  • This position is paid $8.00 per hour, with an estimate of 15 hours weekly.
  • A flexible schedule is available, but the student employee's scheduled hours will most likely be during the school day, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • The America Reads Tutor must be Federal Word Study eligible, hold Act 24 Criminal Background, Act 151 Child Abuse History, and FBI fingerprinting and background clearances
  • Physical Demand

  • Position requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Position requires the ability to move about the campus.
  • Position requires the ability to talk and to hear instruction.
  • Position requires occasional manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to feel, handle, and reach.
  • Position requires occasional stooping, crouching, and bending.
  • Position requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Working conditions are indoors.
