  • Position Summary:

    Student Support Services (TRIO) is a federally funded program through the US Department of Education that is designed to help increase academic success and degree attainment for first-generation college students, students with limited income and/or students who experience a documented disability. With the funding of two grants (SSS Classic & SSS STEM) the UAF SSS program serves over 400 bachelor's degree seeking students from underrepresented and under- resourced backgrounds. Student tutors will serve only SSS participants and report directly to the Student Support Services (TRIO) Associate Director for supervision, scheduling and support.

    Duties:

    50Tutors will help to achieve programmatic mentoring goals by: helping students to build organization, time management, & study skills leading student workshops on topics such as technological literacy connecting & referring students to campus & community resources using listening skills & building rapport to meet students where they are atEssential

    50Tutors will help to achieve programmatic tutoring goals by: helping students with basic course instruction and review leading subject-specific study groups coordinating student outreach Assisting with other projects as assignedEssential

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: This position will provide tutoring in college math, science, business, writing and/or other General Education- specific courses for SSS participants. Courses commonly requested are: MATH 055, 068, 105, 113, 151, 152, 251, 252, 253; PHYS 123, 124; CHEM 105, 106; BIOL 115, 116; ES 201, 346; CS 101; STAT 200; WRTG 111, 211, 212, 213.

    Preference will be given to applicants eligible for Federal Work-study, as determined by the UAF Financial Aid Office, and students participating in the Student Support Services (TRIO) program. Tutors must be registered for six credit hours each fall and spring semester and maintain a GPA of 3.0. A minimum grade of a “B” or higher is required in each course the tutor wishes to assist in. Additionally, tutors must have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and have an interest in working with a diverse group of students. Tutors are required to have strong interpersonal skills and computer literacy.

    A required training will take place before you begin working with students. This training will cover the intricacies of working with our student population, the context of tutoring and mentoring in the post-pandemic environment, and tips and strategies for successful student interactions. Further skill building will be provided at regular intervals throughout the academic year.

    Preferred Experience & Education:

    Required Experience & Education:

    Per department policy - must be a degree seeking student at UAF, taking at least six credits and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0

    Salary Information:

    Starting rate is $18.00 per hour.
