The position is located at the New Westminster Campus. Hours of work: up to a maximum of 20 hours/week. The work terms for this position are:

1. Fall 2024 Sept 3 – Dec 19, 2024

This position will be located in the Faculty of Language, Literature, and Performing Arts, and also undertaken in the field and at Lobe Studios.

The Role

The Student Research Assistant, LLPA is responsible for recording, cataloging, curating, and editing environmental audio samples, such as birdsong, water sounds, and ambient noise.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of supervisor, the SRA duties include:

·Collects, summarizes, and organizes research materials and data.

·Regularly visits natural environments to capture audio recording of birdsong and ambient sound.

·Keeps a detailed record, naming files to indicate location, date and species. ·Curates and catalogues recorded and provided sounds.

·Edits sounds to create samples.

·Check the edited audio recordings for usable quality i.e. without clicks, pops, wind noise, distortion etc.

·Upload edited recordings to an online database.

·Label files with accuracy.

·Creates a sample instrument of natural sounds

·Assists with maintenance of all fieldwork equipment.

·Troubleshoots effectively and resourcefully.

·Meets deadlines as agreed with principal researchers.

·Performs other duties as assigned.

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

·Able to work collaboratively with researchers, artists, and sound engineers.

·Careful attention to detail and a strong sense of responsibility.

·Commitment to academic integrity.

·Familiarity with College resources, particularly in the music technology area.

·Excellent audio recording skills.

·Familiarity with Ableton Live is an asset.

·Keen attention to detail.

·Strong problem-solving and time management ability.

·The ability to organize and catalogue large amounts of audio material

·Interest in at least one of the following research areas would be an asset: ecology, acoustic ecology, ornithology, field recording, data capture, decolonialization and Indigenous land use.

·Transport that confers the ability to access the natural environmental locations with equipment

·Be available for at least two half-days (during the week) in the last two weeks in October for off-site studio work at Lobe

·Be available on the day and evening of November 1st for sound check and performance

Domestic students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant/Student Research Assistant:

1. The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term; OR

2. The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term; OR

The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term

International students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant/Student Research Assistant:

1. The international student is enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College, throughout the academic year; OR

2. The international student, who is not a Douglas College student, but is an international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C., has a valid Study Permit that has the notation – “May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.” Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.

An original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an original Study Permit are required by law before commencing work at Douglas College.

Qualified Douglas College students meeting the above criteria will be given first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.
