The role will undertake clinical teaching and assessment for the Student Nursing Associate (SNA), with the key priorities of driving improvements in pre-registration learner experiences during placements in General Practice, increasing learner engagement and improving retention.

You should be a Registered Nurse with post registration experience in General Practice with experience as a clinical educator or a good understanding of pre-registration nurse education. The post holder will work alongside multi- professional colleagues in the training hubs within the Integrated Care Systems (ICS) to raise awareness and promote the role of the Student Nursing Associate (SNA) role and the benefits the role can play in Primary Care Networks.

    Responsible to: Head of Practice Learning

    Job Purpose:

    Facilitate high standards of clinical practice to General Practice and a key objective is to promote General Practice as an attractive setting for both nurses to develop new pathways to enable entry into the specialism, and Nursing Associates. The post holder will support the development of networks to support nurses, trainee nursing associates and nursing associates to develop a community of practice, to reduce isolation and vulnerability of their roles. You should be a Registered Nurse with post-registration experience in General Practice with experience as a clinical educator or a good understanding of pre-registration nurse education. The General Practice Educator will work alongside the training hubs within the Integrated Care Systems (ICS) to support the following:

  • Raise awareness and promote the role of the Student Nursing Associate (SNA) role and the benefits the role can play in PCNs.
  • Undertake clinical teaching and assessment for the Student Nursing Associate (SNA) to support the successful completion of their programme, if required, and to support SNA with their continuous professional development.
  • Pre-registration nurses during their placements in General Practice. To utilise learning and to drive improvements to learner experience, increase engagement and improve retention.
  • To work with colleagues to develop resources for primary care employers and non-registered staff which will be supported by a clear engagement plan. Resources should also guide non-registered staff on their career pathway.
  • Registered nurses new to the specialism with their development and smooth transition into General Practice.
  • Main Duties & Responsibilities of the role:

  • To help drive recruitment of internal and external candidates as SNAs – this will include the support and promotion of ARRS scheme to employers.

  • Attend relevant employer and sector groups to raise the profile of the SNA role, acting as a key resource for colleagues.

  • Signpost potential candidates to appropriate information needed to meet the educational requirements for their desired course. For example, function skills (Maths and English), and any additional requirements for university entry criteria.

  • Work alongside learners in a coaching and mentoring capacity to promote best practice, to motivate and inspire staff to achieve their best and promote a positive learning culture within General Practice.

  • Encourage the development of practice placements.

  • In the absence within an ICS of an existing preceptorship model for SNA's new to general practice the postholder will support the delivery of a sustainable preceptorship model fit for purpose.

  • Identify and support the training needs for staff new to nursing in general practice, providing individual action learning plans.

  • Work closely with colleagues to develop communication networks and close working with practice managers, practice placement areas and universities supporting the SNA programme.

  • Strive to make a difference to improving the care of patients and the ability to work autonomously and within the team are essential.

  • Collect relevant data, providing reports needed to evaluate the pilot project.

  • Comply with relevant legislative and other requirements (e.g., the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR; Health and Safety; UKVI; and Equality and Diversity) in all working practices.

  • Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required.
