  • Position Summary:

    Are you a UA student looking to gain valuable employment experience? The UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) seeks student employees in the areas of lab, field and office assistant. Multiple departments within CFOS will review applicants from this pool on an as needed basis during the year.

    Duties:

    100Lab/Field Assistant: CFOS seeks student employees to assist with general laboratory or research duties that will help the success of ongoing research projects. Responsibilities include conducting basic laboratory analysis using manual and automated techniques, in addition to other basic lab duties as assigned. Positions work under general or intermittent supervision. Office Assistant: Perform general office support of the department during regular office hours. Students will work under general direction. This position will greet visitors, answer questions, direct them to faculty and staff offices. Answer multiple line telephone, transfer calls or take messages as needed. Assist with printing, scanning, faxing, paper and toner replacement for office printer. Sort incoming mail, forward mail as needed. Receive/log packages delivered and notifying recipients. Assist with the organization of office supplies, refill supplies in the copy/mailbox area. Assist with ProCard checkout system and the collection of receipts. Process credit card transactions using department credit card machine. Fill and mail swag merchandise orders. Assist with department vehicle log/checkout system and office projects as needed.Essential

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: LAB/FIELD ASSISTANT: Knowledge: General laboratory or research practices and excellent organizational skills are essential. Specific needs for projects are a condition for employment; this is a pool recruitment that researchers seeking qualified employees will use to access potential recruits.

    Skills/Abilities: Must have the ability to communicate effectively in writing, verbally and electronically. A basic knowledge of laboratory procedures. Ability and willingness to work with preserved samples. Must be willing to perform tedious tasks and be meticulous. Have strong office organization skills and knowledge of computers, scanners, Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

    OFFICE ASSISTANT: Knowledge: General office practices, procedures and equipment. Effective communicate verbally and in writing.

    Skills/Abilities: Competency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite, database system software, spreadsheets and basic accounting.

    Abilities: Ability to perform moderately strenuous physical activity such as moving/lifting heavy boxes. Work effectively in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of professionalism. Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete work in a timely manner with strong accuracy and exhibit attention to detail.

    Preferred Experience & Education:

    LAB/FIELD ASSISTANT: No licenses are required. Laboratory or professional science research experience is a plus. Successful completion of laboratory courses may be essential, depending on the specific duties required by individual projects.

    OFFICE ASSISTANT: Education: Sufficient to perform the responsibilities of the position and to have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

    Required Experience & Education:

    High School Diploma or equivalent. Some college or comparable experience may be necessary.

    To be eligible for student employment the applicant must be an enrolled UA student in a minimum of 6 credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher, or a newly enrolled student.

    Salary Information:

    This is a Student Assistant 2 position with a starting hourly rate of $14.10.
