The Senior HR Generalist is an experienced, trusted HR partner to faculty, staff and leaders across the institution. Working closely with the Employee Relations Manager, the Senior Generalist independently manages a share of the employee relations caseload, including complaints, investigations, corrective action and grievances under two collective bargaining agreements.

  • Independently lead workplace investigations from intake to resolution, including complex and sensitive matters, and recommend outcomes to the Employee Relations Manager.
  • Advise managers on corrective action, and supports documentation such as warnings and performance improvement plans.
  • Prepare grievance responses, interpret contract language for the two represented employee groups, and advise managers on contract compliance.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential case records, analyze trends, and recommend policy or training changes.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders and managers across the institution on complex employee issues.
  • Meet regularly with department leaders to identify staffing, performance and retention concerns.
  • Conduct exit interviews and stay interviews, and report trends that affect turnover.
  • Interpret HR policies and guide managers on consistent application.
  • Coordinate the annual performance review cycle across the institution.
  • Coach managers on setting expectations, giving feedback and documenting performance.
  • Guide managers through performance improvement plans and follow up on progress.
  • Work with managers to gather information and draft or update position descriptions.
  • Pull and analyze market data from salary surveys, such as CUPA-HR, for new and existing positions.
  • Prepare pay recommendations for offers, promotions and reclassifications, including internal equity checks, for review by the VP of Human Resources. Help managers understand pay decisions.
  • Answer general benefits questions and refer complex issues to the Sr Benefits Specialist.
  • Provide backup coverage for the Sr Benefits Specialist during open enrollment and absences.
  • Identify potential leave and accommodation needs, and connect employees and managers with the Sr Benefits Specialist.
  • Deliver training to managers and employees on policies, performance management and workplace conduct.
  • Support new employee orientation and onboarding, and serve as a resource and mentor to HR colleagues.
  • Lead HR projects and process improvements, such as policy updates and manager training programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, psychology or a related field. Preferred Qualifications • HR experience in higher education, including work with faculty and academic leaders.• Experience in a unionized environment, including grievances and contract interpretation.• Formal training in workplace investigations.• SHRM-SCP, SPHR, SHRM-CP, PHR or a comparable HR certification.• Experience coaching managers on performance management.
