Senior Teaching Associate in Philosophy (Part Time) 0.5 FTE

The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) delivers high quality and distinctive educational programmes for adult learners, predominantly studying part-time, for either personal enrichment or professional development.

We wish to appoint a part-time (0.5 FTE) Senior Teaching Associate in Philosophy to play a key role in delivering new and existing Philosophy courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Senior Teaching Associate will support the development, management, teaching, and ongoing evaluation and improvement of the courses and help to ensure the very highest academic quality and professional standards, commensurate with the University of Cambridge's reputation as one of the world's leading universities.

In the last 10 years, there has been an exponential increase in interest in Philosophy amongst adult, part-time learners. In this time, ICE has launched several new Philosophy courses and increased student numbers, all whilst maintaining the quality and rigour of taught provision. Completion and satisfaction rates remain amongst the highest in continuing and adult education. This new appointment is further testament to ICE's commitment to teaching excellence in Philosophy and to further expansion and development.

Intercultural awareness will be an important attribute for the successful candidate. We have a diverse student body due, in part, to ICE's commitment to competitive pricing. This means that our students are often making an early or mid-career change. Many of our undergraduate students are either studying abroad or are originally from outside of the UK, and many of our postgraduate students are transitioning to Philosophy from other related disciplines. This means that classroom discussions often reflect diverse viewpoints and interdisciplinary thinking. The successful candidate will be someone who can relate philosophical problems to people's experiences and invite people to challenge their thinking, whilst remaining respectful.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to make a major contribution by shaping world-leading undergraduate and postgraduate education in Philosophy, informed by the expertise of researchers and practitioners from across the University of Cambridge.

Candidates should have a PhD in Philosophy or related field and be able to provide evidence of excellence in teaching. Candidates should be able to take an interdisciplinary approach and to identify collaborative opportunities within and beyond the university where appropriate. Alongside strong interpersonal and communication skills, the successful candidate will also have an understanding, enthusiasm and flair for engaging academically with a broad spectrum of colleagues and students, be a strong team player, and demonstrate commitment to continuing education.
