The University of Southampton is a world leading research-intensive university with a high-quality educational offering and is ranked in the Top 100 universities worldwide. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the University's new Strategy Office at a point when it is reviewing its strategic planning processes. The Strategy Office aspires to provide a range of high- quality strategic planning, strategy delivery and transformation services, across the Triple Helix, that have the central purpose of helping the University to achieve its strategic goals.

The role

We are recruiting for two similar but distinct roles.

One role will provide expert strategic planning advice and guidance to faculties, ensuring institutional strategy is translated into faculty plans. This role will have lead responsibility for two specific faculties.

The second role will manage a small team of three analysts and lead the University's central strategic planning and resource allocation processes, including business planning, student number planning and forecasting and the monitoring of performance and progress in academic schools and departments

Day to day responsibilities for both roles will include:

  • Supporting the faculty in developing appropriate KPIs and other processes to monitor and track progress and report on performance, within the faculty and centrally, providing recommendations for actions to ensure goals are met.
  • Working with other professional services business partners, eg Finance and Faculty Operations, to develop joined up action plans or produce business cases for investment proposals.
  • Carrying out detailed benchmarking and other qualitative and quantitative analysis of competitors across a range of performance metrics.
  • About you

    What are we looking for:

  • The requisite skills and knowledge in strategic planning and sufficient presence to become a trusted partner of academic colleagues on the leadership team of a faculty and senior leadership in Professional Services.
  • An ability to communicate complicated ideas succinctly and persuade and influence senior colleagues.
  • Able to work collaboratively with colleagues in academic leadership and other teams in professional services.
  • Someone with excellent analytical skills who is comfortable drawing insight from data and using it to inform decision making and planning. You should be willing and able to analyse and model data yourself using Excel while we have the support of an Analytics and Insight Team for more complex analysis.
  • An interest in higher education and a strong desire to help the University of Southampton achieve its stated strategic goals.
  • As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. With a generous defined benefit pension scheme and holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days, we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.
