Senior Research Associate in High Power RF Engineering

School of Engineering Location: Bailrigg, Lancaster UK Salary: £38,205 (Full time, indefinite with end date contract) Closing Date: Sunday 14 April 2024 Interview Date: Wednesday 24 April 2024 Reference: 0410-24

Applications are invited for a Senior Research associate position seconded to CERN in Geneva and belonging to the Engineering Department of Lancaster University and the Cockcroft Institute of Accelerator Science and Technology. A PDRA is sought to take a key role in the modelling of high-efficiency klystrons and the development of Klystron modelling tools. Klystrons are high power tube amplifiers where a linear electron beam is modulated by a small RF electromagnetic field, which causes bunching, and excited a high power RF fields in the output cavity. The post will utilise klystron modelling and PIC codes to develop new paradigms in klystron design with the aim of developing klystrons with significantly higher efficiencies than currently available.

Ideally applicants should have a PhD in a related subject and experience in the design of linear beam RF devices or the development of software for the modelling of these devices would be considered an advantage.

The appointment will be to university grade 7 and is for a period of 18 months. In addition, a stipend from CERN will be paid while seconded to CERN.
