About the Role

An exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary research team at the Oxford centre of Neuroinflammation.

You are invited to apply to join Professor Lars Fugger and his team of research scientists, computational biologists, and clinicians, having access to state-of-the-art technologies and collaborating with leading researchers both locally and globally.

Physical and mental disability caused by neuroinflammation is a common clinical occurrence in many diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer's and schizophrenia. However, the cause(s) of this inflammation and the devastating consequences that ensue are poorly defined, as reflected by a lack of effective treatments. Moreover, their relatedness to inflammatory diseases outside of the central nervous system (CNS), such as inflammatory bowel disease or rheumatoid arthritis, is also unknown. We have shown how studying individual cells directly from patient blood or mapping biological events across the diseased brain in post-mortem tissue, can expose an intricate network of neuroinflammatory processes, which can change dramatically both through time and within the tissue. Importantly, we have developed fantastic collaborations with our local and international clinical colleagues, enabling us to study these diseases directly from patient samples, which are complemented by a wealth of clinical data. Our in-house capabilities include the generation of single cell epigenetic and transcriptomic data, complemented with protein level data (CITE-seq), spatial transcriptomics, and functional validation studies, including CRISPR-editing of primary cells.

About You

The successful applicant(s) is invited to expand and build upon this exciting research platform and to dissect the underlying biology that either unites or sets complex inflammatory diseases apart. You must therefore be highly motivated and have the ability to develop new ideas and research objectives.

You should have specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research projects and methodologies. You should be able to independently manage a research project and research budget, with the ability to raise research funds through making grant applications.

You should hold a relevant PhD / D.phil with post- qualification research experience.

If you would like to discuss your application informally before applying, please email Professor Fugger ([email protected]).
