James Cook University (JCU) is seeking an experienced medical practitioner to join the College of Medicine and Dentistry as Senior Lecturer, General Practice and Rural Medicine.

This is an opportunity to combine your clinical expertise with teaching, research and student supervision while helping prepare future doctors to make a difference across northern Australia and beyond.

About the role

As Senior Lecturer, General Practice and Rural Medicine, you will contribute to the coordination and delivery of teaching within JCU’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery program, primarily across Years 1 to 3.

Your teaching will focus on social and behavioural sciences, preventive medicine, global health, health promotion and research methods, with scope for the role to evolve according to your expertise and interests. You will also contribute to postgraduate teaching, student research supervision and collaborative research relevant to the strategic priorities of the College of Medicine and Dentistry.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to teaching, assessment and subject coordination in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery program.
• Deliver research methods education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels through face-to-face and online formats.
• Supervise undergraduate, postgraduate coursework, Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
• Participate in research and contribute to the development of a collaborative research program.
• Support JCU’s commitment to reconciliation, sustainability and the University values.

About you

You are an experienced medical practitioner who is passionate about medical education and improving health outcomes in rural and remote communities.

You will bring:

• Current registration as a medical practitioner in Australia.
• Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, or an equivalent qualification.
• Extensive clinical experience, with a focus on general practice.
• Experience teaching within undergraduate medical education.
• An understanding of academic and clinical service delivery in rural and remote areas.
• Strong interpersonal and people management skills.

A relevant record of research, publications or conference presentations, experience working in rural or remote communities, and a willingness to undertake further formal training in medical education will be highly regarded.
