  • About the Role

    Reporting to the Manager Systems Infrastructure, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer: Linux Specialist has overall technical leadership and responsibility for developing and implementing key strategies and plans to ensure the efficient and secure delivery of Linux and associated services across the organisation.

    This technical leadership role includes the architectural design, installation, monitoring and maintenance of the University's entire Linux environment and for providing it with the appropriate levels of resilience. This position manages projects and guides senior staff in the design, implementation, and ongoing management of innovative solutions related to emerging Linux requirements.

    Information Strategy and Technology Services (ISTS) , which has the primary strategic and operational responsibility for the provision of the UniSA's considerable IT infrastructure and services has approximately 150 staff in 8 key areas.

    Information Strategy and Technology Services contributes to the University's strategic goals and objectives by providing:

  • University wide IT support for staff and students;
  • technical support, development and management of:
  • communication services such as fixed and wireless data networks, telephone systems, voicemail, and high-speed access to the internet;
  • collaboration facilities such as email, calendaring, video and audio conferencing, instant messaging and document sharing;
  • over 2,700 on campus computers for students;
  • teaching technology in general purpose teaching spaces; and
  • central infrastructure (servers, data storage and data centres)
  • technical support, development and management of information systems which support online teaching and learning, research management and research education, student experience, administration, data integration and business intelligence, the staff and student portals, and the corporate web;
  • identification and management of ICT based risks and disaster recovery planning;
  • technical project management services for major, University wide ITC projects;
  • management of University wide hardware and software purchasing arrangements; and
  • development, maintenance and communication of policies, procedures and guidelines for the use of information technology within the university.
  • ISTS is customer focussed and operated a service management framework based on AS8018 and provides seamless 24 x 7 x 52 service to students and staff. Information Strategy and Technology Services has a commitment to staff development and provides a professional environment in which to work.

    The University's systems infrastructure environment provides the underlying resources for access and identity, shared file systems, corporate systems, data management and disaster recovery. In addition, the Systems Infrastructure team are responsible for the administration and support of core infrastructure applications.

    The University's IT infrastructure is required to be operational 24 hours per day x 365 days per year where possible. Systems Infrastructure staff are responsible for ensuring that the IT infrastructure supporting the University's business critical systems functions correctly and provides adequate performance to maintain productivity for end-users. ISTS has a commitment to staff development and provides a professional environment in which to work.

    Essential Skills and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (normally a degree) and experience, or demonstrated equivalent knowledge, experience and skills; and a commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Extensive expertise in design, documentation, and provision of technical leadership for the architecture of specific technologies associated with Linux open-source operating systems in both physical and virtualised environments
  • Extensive scripting experience in Python, Bash Shell, Ruby, Perl, PHP and Java Script or a related language and orchestration tools like Ansible, Satellite and Puppet to maintain and improve consistency with Linux operating system
  • Knowledge of database such as MSSQL, Oracle or PostgresSQL
  • Significant knowledge in automation and configuration technologies, including Ansible, Satellite and Puppet
