The above full time post is available immediately, on a fixed term basis, for an initial period of 12 months in the Centre for Metamaterial Research and Innovation.

The post

The Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy wishes to recruit a Senior Industrial Research Fellow to develop and lead a programme of industry-funded research with potential for high impact. This QinetiQ-funded post within the within the Centre for Metamaterial Research and Innovation (www. metamaterial.center) is available immediately.

The post-holder be required to undertake fundamental and applied physics research in the field of electromagnetic materials, and to develop and lead new proposals for funding, to explore the control of electromagnetic scattering across a wide range of frequencies, from 100s of MHz through to 100s of GHz. A combination of analytical, numerical modelling and experimental techniques will be developed and used as part of this work.

The research topics will evolve during the funded term, reflecting the priority needs of QinetiQ. This programme is expected to run for at least 1 year and a successful outcome will see publications in high-impact journals (after due clearance agreed) and follow-on funding. The role-holder will be required to report regularly to QinetiQ, and will be supported by their Exeter academic- and QinetiQ industry-lead.

About you

The successful applicant will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in electromagnetic materials and/or metamaterials, and will be a nationally recognised authority in this field. They will have a long and successful track record of expertise in numerical modelling and experimental characterisation techniques, and thorough understanding of the scientific literature related to electromagnetic properties of materials and devices; the design and optimisation of electromagnetic metamaterials; structural scattering mechanisms; and techniques for controlling the propagation of electromagnetic waves

In addition, the successful applicant will provide academic leadership to research teams, lead and develop internal and external networks and develop links with external contacts in order to foster collaboration, and develop valuable impact for REF. They will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies. In particular, they will have experience of contribution to proposals for funding from non-UKRI sources (e.g. direct from industry, DASA etc), as well as with undertaking contract research and consultancy with industry and government.

Applicants will be able to contribute to the development of research strategies; participate in the overall management of the Centre for Metamaterial Research and Innovation, in areas such as strategic planning, budget management and business planning; plan and deliver research, consultancy or similar programmes and actively seek and secure research funding.
