Job Title: Senior Clinical Lecturer in Pathology

Reporting To: Prof Siobhan Glavey, Head of Department of Pathology, or nominee

Location: St Stephen's Green and Beaumont Hospital

Contract: One year, full-time

Objective:

The principal objective of the post is to participate in the development, direction, teaching, facilitation and examinations of the undergraduate teaching programme. The successful candidate will also participate in a growing clinical, health professions education and translational research programme in Pathology. In addition, the successful candidate will provide guidance to the Department of Pathology Clinical Lecturers and Tutors, and assist with their orientation. Support with overseeing, coordinating the ongoing delivery of the undergraduate teaching programme.

Contract:

This appointment is for a period of one year.

Level of appointment will depend on the successful candidate's previous experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Teaching, Learning and Assessment

o Coordinate and oversee development, delivery and evaluation of lectures, case-based learning, small group teaching sessions, and assessment activities, with support from senior colleagues o Curriculum development and redevelopment of joint case-based learning sessions between pathology and microbiology, ensuring the development of cases covers relevant key material, while also ensuring no duplication of content takes place. This requires expert pathology input from case design to implementation o Deliver case-based teaching sessions, clinic pathological cases, drop in sessions and act as a key facilitator in SSG for all pathology teaching for years 1 and 2 o Take on lead roles in THEPII year 1 and year 2 (transformation of the undergraduate curriculum) including curriculum development as nominated o Within the department participate in all aspects of examinations throughout the academic year, including the development and maintenance of the Practique question bank for pathology and the generation of exam questions for knowledge checks and progress testing o Integration of digital pathology whole slide images into undergraduate haematology and pathology curriculum content. o Maintenance and updating of Moodle and Calpath content o Teaching and supervision of students on the student selected Molecular Haematology module as well as curriculum development for this module o Development of digital pathology and AI in cancer teaching and research for students

• Supervision, Leadership and Mentoring

o Lead the guidance and supervision of Clinical Lecturer and Tutors, with support from senior colleagues o Provide group and individual support to guide and nurture the overall performance and development of Clinical Lecturers/Tutors o Train, motivate and engage more junior tutors and lecturers

o Coordinate the annual induction programme, and seek ways to enhance the process

• Communication and Relationships

o Provide detailed weekly updates to senior colleagues on all teaching, learning, assessment and academic governance issues o Act as a key link with year leads and other departments at all sites in relation to the efficient and effective delivery of the undergraduate programme o Communicate with students and colleagues in a timely and professional manner in person, remotely and asynchronously as needed. o Support professional services staff with academic input for the coordination of teaching, learning and assessment

• Research

o Lead AI based research in the department based on whole slide imaging of selected tumours o Supervision of Student Selected Project students for the department of pathology o Preparation and presentation of research at national and international conferences and paper writing

Other responsibilities include:

• Performing Clinical Work on-site in RCSI Teaching Hospitals; Detail and commitment to be defined with relevant head of department • Ensuring adherence to all Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland policies and procedures • Complying with statutory legislation and department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety • Representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI at all times • Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time

Candidate Specifications: Essential

The successful candidate should:

• Possess evidence of registration with the Irish Medical Council • Possess a keen interest in lecturing and interacting with undergraduate students • Demonstrate excellent communication skills

• Demonstrate the ability to communicate, motivate and positively inspire cooperation from others

• Show evidence of quality and/or process enhancement experience ideally including the enhancement of teaching and assessment methods and approaches

Desirable

It would be advantageous if the successful candidate has:

• Some team or project leading experience • Previous experience in undergraduate or postgraduate teaching centre • Previous experience using E-learning/VLE systems • Previous experience of teaching and assessing students in an academic environment • Previous experience in research • Completed at least 4 years of clinical experience post-internship

• Occupational Health Clearance • Garda Vetting • Police Clearance (if in residence outside of Ireland for periods of 6 months or more at any stage)

Garda Vetting and Occ Health checks will be conducted by RCSI and partners
