  • About the Role

    Reporting to the Deputy Director, UniSA Research Office, the Senior Advisor: Research Contracts will provide highly specialised and strategic advice in the negotiation, establishment and execution of complex and high value research contracts in the University and/or matters related to research contracts to achieve desired outcomes and mitigate the contractual risks to the University.

    This position provides critical support to the Manager: Research Projects Management in triaging & allocating contracts to the team and providing functional expertise and guidance to the Research Contracts team to create and sustain a high-performance team culture.

    The position also supports the University's Enterprise Partnership Unit, by working closely with the Business Development Managers as they develop and grow productive relationships with top 10% industry partners, particularly in the health, defence and national security sectors, and with key government agencies.

    About the University Research Office (URO)

    University Research Office (URO) provides support for the management of research, and administers sponsored research projects, along with collaborative and contract research arrangements. It is also responsible for ensuring the responsible and ethical conduct of research, and for developing and implementing strategic initiatives to improve the quality of the experience and outcomes for postgraduate research students.

    The Research Contracts Team provides strategic and operational support to the URO leadership team to support researchers and stakeholders in the preparation, review, negotiation, and execution (in accordance with the University's delegation framework) of various types of research contracts, including both standard form contracts and bespoke research agreements.

    The team works closely with internal professional services to obtain specialist or complex advice to support quality, compliant research contracting. Types of research agreements include, for example, confidentiality agreements for research purposes; funding or strategic agreements with industry partners, government funders, Collaborative Research Centres (CRCs), or other research institutions; collaborative research agreements; multi-institutional agreements; material transfer agreements; clinical trial research agreements; tender compliance and contracting reviews; project or agreement modifications (e.g., variation, novation); and research project level administration arrangements (e.g., subcontracting or service arrangements).

    Essential Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law, Commerce, Business or an equivalent qualification coupled with extensive relevant experience in research contract drafting, review, negotiation, administration, and advising on project-based contracts in a research, commercial or government environment
  • Strong knowledge of a range of research agreements including but not limited to the following: industry agreements; tender documentation; international funding agreements; multi- institutional/multi-party agreements; clinical trial agreements; and collaborative research agreements
  • Demonstrated experience of management and supervision of a team to achieve the delivery of core business outcomes
  • Understanding the management of controls in relation to Foreign Interference risks on behalf of an organisation
  • Understanding of and experience in a commercial and research contracting environment and commercial contracting with demonstrated ability to manage risk by critiquing complex legal documents, negotiating key clauses and providing accurate and timely feedback to key stakeholders both internal and external
