  • Role Description Department

    Applications are invited for a full-time technician for 12 months to provide technical and scientific support to the research group of Dr. Purba Mukherjee in the York Structural Biology Laboratory in the Department of Chemistry. You will support the group's efforts in studies of replication initiation using biochemical and biophysical methods.

    The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful departments at York and we are renowned internationally for our research.     Role

    You will produce and purify DNA polymerases and other proteins from various systems and establish experimental conditions for production of DNA replication assemblies suitable for biochemical and biophysical studies. You will be required to conduct a variety of biochemical assays, including but not limited to, fluorescence based kinetic nucleotide incorporation assays, analyse products using sequencing gels as well as high throughput 96-well plate-based assays.

    Key responsibilities will include: -

  • Work effectively on own initiative and also with other staff and students to help solve problems
  • Plan and perform experiments using a range of scientific techniques
  • Be responsible for the maintenance, modification, repair and operation of technical equipment, liaise with appropriate staff and external service providers as required
  • Pro-actively update and improve processes, maintain accurate records, contribute to the development of protocols, standard operating procedures and maintenance schedules
  • Understand, promote and apply COSHH/Risk Assessment and departmental health and safety protocols ensuring procedures are followed at all times
  • Manage a small budget, monitor resource usage, assist with purchasing including ordering and distributing goods
  • Provide inductions, training and demonstrations of specialist techniques ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines
  • Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
  • HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent experience
  • RSciTech / EngTech or willingness to work towards these or equivalent professional registration
  • Knowledge of relevant safety regulations and procedures for example, COSHH and risk assessment
  • Competent in the use of advanced technical equipment and techniques to perform complex tasks
  • IT skills for a wide range of applications, including Google Apps, Word, Excel and specialist software where appropriate.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data and explain complex information
  • Demonstrated ability in using AKTA protein purification systems and establishing biochemical assays
  • Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology including cloning and genetic modification, and in protein production and purification at scales and purity for structural studies
  • Actively demonstrates a commitment to professional development
