THE ROLE

An exciting role has become available in the School of Natural Science at Macquarie University (Sydney). We are currently seeking a Part Time Research Officer to join our dynamic and dedicated team at the Galleria Research Facility at Macquarie University.

The Galleria Research Facility is the Australia's first fully functional, high-throughput facility for Galleria mellonella as a versatile in vivo invertebrate animal model. The facility was established in 2020 across school of Applied Biosciences and school of Natural Sciences, Macquarie University and is dedicated to delivering high quality research that increase the research options for in vivo testing by providing an efficient, ethical, and affordable animal model for numerous applications including:

  • Infection and pathogenicity

  • Pharmacological and chemical toxicity

  • Microbe-microbe or microbe-host interactions

  • Bioremediation

  • The role

    We are seeking a suitably qualified Research Officer to work within School of Natural Sciences research team to support the Galleria Research Facility at Macquarie University. You will be expected to:

  • Manage health and wellbeing of Galleria mellonella (great wax moth) colony

  • Prepare drug/ chemical stocks

  • Culture and prepare bacteria/ fungi

  • Inject bacteria/ drug into Galleria larvae

  • Perform experiments independently and in collaboration with other team members

  • Be part of an innovative project to perform a range of laboratory tests and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures as directed;

  • Undertake the data management and collection tasks of Galleria experimental data

  • Prepare, submit and follow up the biosafety applications and amendments

  • Develop and maintain the project documents and equipment in line with established laboratory process, procedures and protocols

  • Inventory management and ordering as required

    Essential criteria:

  • Relevant degree and/or experience

  • Meticulous and excellent in record of experimental data.

  • Previous experience working in PC2 lab.

  • Experience working both as an independent researcher and in a team-based environment.

  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to engage with wide range of stakeholders, staff and students.

  • Have insect or animal handling and injecting skill is preferrable.

  • Previous experience working with bacterial/ fungal pathogen is a plus.

  • Salary Package: Level 5 from $80,753 - $91,815 per annum, plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading. Pro-rata rates apply for part-time appointment.

    Appointment Type: 3 days a week (0.6 FTE), fixed-term up 31st Dec 2024, with the potential for extension.
