Job Summary

A post-doctoral research position at the University of Michigan (USA), under the supervision of Prof. Herek Clack, is currently available focusing on experimental studies of aerosols and airborne pathogens.

Responsibilities*

Michigan Center for Research in Influenza Transmission (MiCRIT) is one of several new NIH-funded centers focused on comprehensive studies of the mechanisms of influenza transmission.  Within MiCRIT, our lab is tasked with experimentally examining the evolution and fate of influenza aerosols under laboratory-controlled environmental conditions (e.g., air temperature, relative humidity, and trace air contaminants) that are relevant to homes, child care centers, and other indoor spaces where flu can be transmitted.   We are pursuing this objective through two experimental pathways:  1) controlled electrodynamic levitation of viral aerosols, and 2) aerosol pH monitoring through aerosol fluorescence.  The successful candidate will lead these experimental efforts including collection and analysis of experimental data.  In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct and oversee collection and analysis of data; preparation and presentation of findings during periodic MiCRIT meetings and relevant conferences; and preparation of manuscripts for publication.  The successful candidate will serve as the principal point of contact between our lab and other MiCRIT collaborating labs, as well as the broader NIH Influenza Transmission Research Consortium (ITRC).

Required Qualifications*

A Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering; biology, microbiology, or biological engineering; environmental engineering; mechanical engineering; physics; or other disciplines that are demonstrably closely related to the responsibilities and qualifications described above and below.

Desired Qualifications*

- Demonstrated experience with aerosol sampling or aerosol characterization.
- Demonstrated experience with bioaerosols.
- Demonstrated experience with fluorescence spectroscopy.
- Demonstrated experience with chiral dichroism spectroscopy.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
- Proficiency in project management.
